Align your degree to your role
USCIS scrutinizes whether your specific degree field directly relates to Senior Application Developer duties. A computer science or software engineering degree strengthens your petition. A general business degree paired with a developer role often triggers a Request for Evidence.
Use OFLC Wage Search before negotiating
Pull the prevailing wage for your exact SOC code and work location before you accept an offer. Your employer must certify that salary in the LCA, so knowing the DOL floor protects you from offers that can't clear the filing threshold.
Target cap-exempt employers strategically
Universities, nonprofit research organizations, and government entities are exempt from the annual H-1B cap. Senior Application Developer roles at these institutions can be filed any time of year, bypassing the April lottery entirely.
Search H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter your job search by verified H-1B LCA filing history on Migrate Mate. You'll see which employers have sponsored Senior Application Developer roles before, so you're not cold-applying to companies unlikely to file a petition.
Confirm your employer files I-129 directly
Some staffing agencies place developers at client companies but petition under the agency's name, creating complications if you're later transferred. Ask whether the petitioner is the direct employer or a third-party staffing firm before signing an offer.
Request premium processing before your OPT expires
USCIS offers 15-business-day adjudication through premium processing. If your OPT end date is close to October 1, requesting premium processing gives you enough lead time to resolve any RFE without a gap in work authorization.

Find Senior Application Developer JobsSenior Application Developer H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior Application Developer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS classifies Senior Application Developer positions as specialty occupations because they normally require at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a directly related field. The O*NET profile for this occupation supports the degree requirement, which is central to the specialty occupation determination. Your employer documents this in the I-129 petition.
How do I find employers who actually sponsor H-1B visas for this role?
Search on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history for application developer roles. DOL's public LCA disclosure data shows which companies have filed Labor Condition Applications for similar positions. Focusing on employers with an established filing track record significantly reduces the risk of an offer falling through at the sponsorship stage.
What happens to my H-1B petition if I change employers mid-year?
H-1B portability under AC21 lets you start working for a new employer once they file a new I-129 petition on your behalf, provided your current H-1B has been approved for at least 180 days and the new role is in the same or a closely related occupational classification. You don't need to wait for the new petition to be approved before starting work.
Can my employer sponsor me for an H-1B if I'm currently on OPT STEM extension?
Yes, and this is one of the most common pathways for Senior Application Developer roles. Your employer files the H-1B petition during the April registration window, and if selected, your employment authorization continues under cap-gap rules through September 30. Your STEM OPT employer must be enrolled in E-Verify, which also satisfies one of the H-1B filing requirements.
Does the job title on my offer letter need to match the H-1B petition exactly?
The job title doesn't need to be identical, but the duties and SOC code in the Labor Condition Application must accurately reflect what you'll actually do. If the LCA lists a generic developer title but your day-to-day work is senior-level architecture and technical leadership, misalignment can create problems during audits or extensions. Your employer should describe actual duties in the I-129 support letter, not just echo the job posting.
