Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Coding Specialist
Verify your SOC code before applying
Coding Specialist roles are typically filed under SOC 29-2072 (Medical Records Specialists). Confirm the employer's LCA uses this code, since a mismatched SOC can trigger an RFE or delay certification at DOL.
Document your credential equivalency early
USCIS scrutinizes specialty occupation claims for coding roles. Get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator before your employer files, especially if your health information degree is from outside the U.S.
Search LCA filings to find active sponsors
Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by H-1B LCA filings for coding and health information roles, so you're targeting companies with a documented history of sponsoring this occupation, not guessing from job titles alone.
Target employers already E-Verify enrolled
Hospitals and health systems with federal contracts must use E-Verify, which also signals a streamlined onboarding process for H-1B hires. Ask HR whether the facility is enrolled before investing time in the interview process.
Negotiate your start date around cap deadlines
H-1B employment can't begin before October 1 of the fiscal year the petition was filed for. If you receive an offer in February, build at least a seven-month buffer into your start date discussion so the employer files in March.
Use the OFLC Wage Search to benchmark Level I vs Level II
Employers set your prevailing wage at one of four DOL levels. Run the OFLC Wage Search for your specific SOC code and metro area before your offer letter arrives, so you can spot a Level I filing on a senior-scope role.
H-1B Visa Coding Specialist: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Coding Specialist role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, if the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in health information management, medical coding, or a closely related field. Roles that list a degree as preferred rather than required may face RFEs. Employers strengthen the petition by referencing the O*NET profile for Medical Records Specialists and tying the job duties directly to degree-level coursework in anatomy, physiology, and coding systems.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Coding Specialist roles?
Hospital systems, revenue cycle management firms, health insurance companies, and health IT vendors are the most consistent sponsors for this occupation. Remote coding roles have expanded the pool significantly since 2020. Migrate Mate filters employers by verified LCA filing history for coding and health information roles, so you can identify active sponsors without manually searching DOL disclosure data.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage requirement affect Coding Specialist offers?
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for the SOC code and geographic location listed on the LCA. For Coding Specialists, wage levels vary significantly by metro area and by whether the role is classified at Level I (entry) or Level II (qualified). Run the OFLC Wage Search for SOC 29-2072 in your target city before accepting an offer to confirm the filing level matches your actual experience.
Can a Coding Specialist work remotely on an H-1B visa?
Yes, but each work location must have a certified LCA on file. If you work from a home office in a different metro area than your employer's address, a separate LCA may be required for that location. USCIS and DOL have both issued guidance on multi-location H-1B compliance. Confirm with your employer's immigration counsel whether your home address requires a separate posting and LCA before you begin remote work.
What happens to my H-1B status if I switch coding employers?
You can start working for a new H-1B sponsor as soon as the new employer files a non-frivolous petition on your behalf, under H-1B portability rules from AC21. You don't need to wait for approval. The new employer must file before your current status expires, and the role must be in the same or a similar occupational classification as your original petition. Keep copies of both your current I-94 and receipt notice from the previous employer.
