Product Planning and Development, Scientific Product Strategy – Life Science & Biotech Reagents
Position Type: Full-time, Strategic/Front-end Portfolio Management
The ideal candidate will have a strong scientific background and industry experience in biotechnology or life sciences, combined with experience in product management, product strategy, or related roles. We are particularly interested in candidates who can leverage their scientific expertise and industry knowledge to drive product strategy and translate scientific insights into business and product opportunities.
This is a front-end product strategy and planning role where you'll define what GenScript should build over the next 3–5 years by identifying unmet customer needs, evaluating emerging technologies, and shaping the future portfolio of life science research reagents.
Location: Remote, with occasional travel to Piscataway, New Jersey
Compensation: The estimated salary range is $125,000 - $155,000 based upon experience level.
Job Scope:
At GenScript, we believe great products begin long before the first experiment. Under GenScript's Catalog Products Business Unit, you won't simply manage existing products—you will design the future of our life science research portfolio.
This role sits at the intersection of science, technology, customer insight, and business strategy, helping define WHAT products GenScript should build over the next 3–5 years. Focused purely on front-end strategic planning, you will define the target specifications (What) while liberating R&D to explore the best execution (How).
You will work closely with R&D, Marketing, Business Development, Commercial, and executive leadership to discover unmet customer needs, identify emerging technology opportunities, design high-barrier product portfolios, and shape long-term innovation strategy.
Key Responsibilities (What You'll Do):
1) Design Future Product Portfolio & Roadmaps
- Portfolio Strategy: Build long-term product portfolio strategies across antibodies, recombinant proteins, enzymes, bioassays, protein purification products, Cell & Gene Therapy (GCT) reagents, and emerging technology platforms.
- White Space Identification: Pinpoint technology white spaces and unarticulated customer needs to establish a sustainable, high-margin product menu.
- Strategic Roadmapping: Formulate and maintain future product roadmaps aligned with global business unit growth objectives.
2) Customer Insights & Actionable VOC
- Deep Workflow Understanding: Transform scientific insights into commercial opportunities by deep-diving into customer workflows, Jobs-to-be-Done (JTBD), and Voice of the Customer (VOC).
- Market Intuition: Keep a pulse on emerging research trends, technology evolution, and the global competitive landscape. Your goal is to discover latent opportunities that customers have not yet articulated.
3) Shape Innovation & Platform Strategy
- Multidimensional Evaluation: Evaluate future portfolio opportunities by integrating scientific feasibility, customer value, market potential, competitive differentiation, intellectual property (IP), and business economics.
- Make vs. Buy Assessment: Conduct thorough "Build vs. Buy vs. Partner" assessments to support annual strategic planning and executive innovation reviews.
4) Connect Science with Business
- Cross-Functional Leadership: Partner seamlessly with R&D, Marketing, Business Development, Commercial, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and QA/RA to transform raw ideas into high-impact product development programs.
- Executive Communication: Develop data-driven strategic recommendations and business cases to guide executive investment decisions.
Education:
- PhD preferred (Master's degree with exceptional industry experience will also be highly considered) in:
- Biology / Cell Biology
- Immunology
- Protein Engineering / Antibody Engineering
- Biochemistry / Bioengineering or related life science disciplines.
Experience:
We are looking for an individual who seamlessly combines scientific depth with corporate strategic thinking. Preferred experience includes one or more of the following:
- Protein engineering, Antibody discovery & optimization
- Cell & Gene Therapy (GCT) reagent development
- Functional proteins and Bioassays
- Advanced protein purification technologies
Highly Desirable: Experience and service in Early Discovery, Platform Development, or CMC within biopharma or top-tier CROs.
A Strong Plus: Direct experience interacting with biopharma customers, supporting business development, technical marketing, or corporate strategic planning.
Core Competencies:
- Strategic Thinking & Systems Thinking
- Scientific Curiosity & Innovation Management
- Customer-Centric Mindset (VOC/JTBD)
- Portfolio Design & Market Insight
- Cross-functional Leadership & Executive Communication
- Data-driven Decision Making
What Makes You Successful:
You are someone who naturally enjoys asking questions such as:
- Why do customers need this? What problem are we really solving?
- Is this the best, highest-barrier product we could build?
- What technology will define the next five years of drug discovery?
You possess the rare ability to synthesize Scientific Innovation, Customer Insight, Business Opportunity, and Technology Strategy into clear, decisive product definitions.
Benefits:
Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance as well as a 401(k) retirement plan with a company match that vests fully on day one. We offer paid parental leave after just three (3) months of employment, and a paid time off policy that includes vacation time, personal time, sick time, floating holidays, and company holidays. Additional benefits include flexible spending and health savings accounts, life and AD&D insurance, short- and long-term disability coverage, legal assistance, and supplemental plans such as pet, critical illness, accident, and hospital indemnity insurance. Align your degree to product strategy
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your degree field and the role. A Product Strategy Lead position typically maps to degrees in business administration, engineering, economics, or computer science. Document that connection explicitly in your resume before applying.
Use OFLC Wage Search to set expectations
Look up prevailing wage data for Product Strategy Lead roles by metro area before negotiating. Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL's prevailing wage, so knowing the Level II and Level III figures strengthens your offer discussions.
Target employers with cap-exempt status
Universities, nonprofit research organizations, and government-affiliated entities are cap-exempt, meaning they can file your H-1B petition outside the annual lottery. Product strategy roles at these institutions are less common but do exist, bypassing the April registration window entirely.
Search H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter Product Strategy Lead roles on Migrate Mate by employers with verified H-1B filing history. This narrows your search to companies that have already navigated the sponsorship process for similar roles, cutting time spent on employers unlikely to file.
Confirm O*NET classification with your employer
Product Strategy Lead maps to O*NET's Management Analysts or General and Operations Managers categories depending on job duties. The SOC code your employer selects affects the prevailing wage tier and LCA filing, so confirm it matches your actual responsibilities before the petition is filed.
Time your offer acceptance around registration
USCIS opens H-1B registration each March for an April 1 start date. If you receive an offer in late fall or winter, negotiate a start date that gives your employer enough runway to register you and, if selected, file the full petition before October 1.
H-1B Visa Product Strategy Lead: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Product Strategy Lead role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as business administration, engineering, economics, or a related discipline. USCIS evaluates the job duties, not just the title. Roles with broad generalist responsibilities or no defined degree requirement can face Requests for Evidence, so the job description should tie specific duties to a qualifying degree field.
How do I find employers who sponsor H-1B visas for product strategy roles?
Migrate Mate lets you search Product Strategy Lead roles filtered by employers with documented H-1B filing history, so you're not guessing which companies will sponsor. Cross-referencing with DOL LCA disclosure data also shows which employers have certified wages for similar positions in your target metro area.
What happens to my H-1B if my employer restructures and eliminates my product strategy role?
You enter a 60-day grace period from your last day of employment to find a new sponsor and have a new H-1B petition filed on your behalf. During this window you can't work, but you can interview and negotiate offers. If your new employer files a transfer petition before the grace period ends, you're authorized to start once the petition is received by USCIS.
Can my employer change my title from Product Strategy Lead to a related role without refiling?
It depends on whether the change constitutes a material change to the petition. A new title with substantially different duties, a different SOC code, or a change in worksite location typically requires an amended H-1B petition. A title change that reflects the same scope and responsibilities usually doesn't, but your employer's immigration counsel should make that call before the change takes effect.
How does the prevailing wage requirement affect product strategy job offers?
Your employer must certify on the LCA that your salary meets or exceeds the DOL's prevailing wage for the role at the specific work location. For Product Strategy Lead positions, the wage level depends on your duties and experience tier. You can verify the applicable wage using the OFLC Wage Search tool before your offer is finalized, which gives you a baseline for salary negotiations.
