Align your resume to specialty occupation criteria
USCIS evaluates whether a Senior IT Engineer role requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field. Frame your resume around systems architecture, infrastructure design, or cloud engineering to reinforce the theoretical and practical depth the specialty occupation standard demands.
Use OFLC Wage Search before salary negotiations
Look up the prevailing wage for Senior IT Engineer in your target metro before accepting an offer. Your employer's LCA must certify they'll pay at least that wage level, so knowing the DOL threshold tells you the floor of any compliant offer.
Filter employers by active LCA filing history
Search Migrate Mate to find employers with verified DOL Labor Condition Application filings for Senior IT Engineer roles. This filters out companies that say they sponsor but haven't actually filed, saving you weeks of back-and-forth with HR.
Target cap-exempt employers to avoid the lottery
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government-affiliated entities are cap-exempt, meaning your H-1B petition bypasses the annual 85,000-slot lottery entirely. Senior IT Engineer roles at these institutions are increasingly competitive and worth prioritizing if your timeline is tight.
Verify E-Verify enrollment before your start date
If you're transitioning from OPT or another status, confirm your employer is enrolled in E-Verify before you submit work authorization documents. Gaps in enrollment have delayed onboarding for Senior IT Engineers even after USCIS approval.
Request premium processing when offer timing is tight
USCIS offers premium processing on I-129 petitions for a faster adjudication window. If your current status has a firm expiration date or your employer needs you onboarded by a specific quarter, premium processing removes most of the scheduling uncertainty.

Find Senior IT Engineer JobsSenior IT Engineer H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior IT Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, Senior IT Engineer consistently qualifies as a specialty occupation because the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, electrical engineering, or a directly related technical field. USCIS looks at whether the job description demands specialized theoretical knowledge, which senior-level IT engineering roles typically satisfy. The O*NET profile for this occupation supports the degree requirement, which strengthens the petition.
How do I find employers who actually sponsor H-1B visas for Senior IT Engineer positions?
The most reliable method is checking DOL Labor Condition Application disclosure data, which shows every employer that has certified an LCA for a given job title. Migrate Mate surfaces this filing history by role and employer so you can see which companies have an active track record of sponsoring Senior IT Engineers, not just those that claim they do in job postings.
What happens to my H-1B status if my Senior IT Engineer role changes significantly after filing?
A material change in job duties, location, or the employer's classification of your role can trigger an amended I-129 petition requirement. If your responsibilities shift from, for example, hands-on infrastructure work to a management track with a different SOC code, your employer should file an amendment before the change takes effect. Failing to do so can create status complications during future renewals or green card applications.
Can I switch employers as an H-1B Senior IT Engineer without losing my status?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules codified in AC21, you can start working for a new employer as soon as the new I-129 petition is filed, provided your original H-1B was approved and you've been in valid status. You don't need to wait for USCIS to adjudicate the new petition. The key requirement is that the new role must also qualify as a specialty occupation in a related field.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage requirement affect Senior IT Engineer offers?
Before USCIS can approve your H-1B petition, your employer must file an LCA certifying they'll pay you at least the DOL prevailing wage for Senior IT Engineer in the specific geographic work location. The prevailing wage is determined by job zone and wage level, and Level III or IV wages apply to senior roles. You can verify the applicable wage using the OFLC Wage Search before evaluating any offer.
