H-1B Visa Sewing Jobs
Sewing roles can qualify for H-1B sponsorship when the position requires a bachelor's degree in a specialized field such as fashion design, textile engineering, or apparel technology. Employers in manufacturing, fashion, and technical textiles do file LCAs for these roles, though qualifying the position as a specialty occupation requires careful documentation.

Document your specialized degree field precisely
USCIS scrutinizes sewing-related H-1B petitions heavily because the occupation spans both trade and degree-level work. Your credential evaluation must map your degree directly to the specific technical or design function the role requires, not sewing as a general skill.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for apparel, textile, or fashion design roles. A proven LCA filing history signals the employer already understands specialty occupation documentation for this category.
Verify your role's SOC code before applying
Sewing roles often get classified under SOC 51-6051 (Sewers, Hand) or 27-1022 (Fashion Designers), and the classification directly affects prevailing wage and specialty occupation eligibility. Cross-reference the job description against O*NET to confirm the correct classification before your employer files.
Distinguish technical from production sewing in your offer letter
Employers must frame the role around degree-required functions, such as pattern engineering, technical specification development, or quality systems oversight, not production output. A poorly drafted offer letter is one of the most common reasons USCIS issues an RFE on sewing-related petitions.
Check prevailing wage requirements before negotiating salary
The DOL requires your offered wage to meet or exceed the prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location. Run the OFLC Wage Search using the specific SOC code your employer intends to file under so you negotiate from accurate wage-level data.
File during cap season with premium processing
H-1B cap registration opens in March, and sewing-adjacent roles with borderline specialty occupation arguments benefit from premium processing. USCIS adjudicates premium cases within 15 business days, giving your employer time to respond to an RFE before your start date.

Find Sewing JobsSewing H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Can a sewing job qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, but only when the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific related field as a minimum entry requirement. Roles focused on fashion design, textile engineering, or technical apparel development can qualify. General production sewing roles that accept workers without a degree typically do not meet the specialty occupation standard USCIS applies.
How do I find employers who sponsor H-1B visas for sewing and apparel roles?
Migrate Mate surfaces employers with verified LCA filing history for apparel and textile occupations, letting you focus on companies that have already navigated specialty occupation documentation for this category. This is more reliable than searching broadly, since most sewing-related H-1B sponsorships come from fashion houses, technical textile manufacturers, and specialized apparel brands rather than general manufacturers.
What SOC code applies to H-1B sewing jobs and why does it matter?
The SOC code determines both the prevailing wage your employer must pay and the strength of the specialty occupation argument. Design-focused roles often fall under SOC 27-1022 (Fashion Designers), while technical production roles may fall under SOC 51-6051. Misclassification is a common RFE trigger, so confirming the correct code via O*NET before your employer files the LCA is essential.
Does the employer or the employee file the H-1B petition for a sewing role?
The employer files the H-1B petition with USCIS on your behalf. For sewing roles, the employer must first obtain a certified Labor Condition Application from the DOL, which certifies the offered wage meets prevailing wage standards. You can't self-petition for an H-1B. If your employer is unfamiliar with the process for design or textile roles, that gap in experience increases the risk of an RFE.
What documentation strengthens an H-1B petition for a sewing or textile design role?
USCIS looks for evidence that the position requires a specific bachelor's degree, not just any degree. Useful supporting documents include industry wage surveys, job postings from comparable employers requiring the same degree, and an expert opinion letter from a relevant professional association. Your own transcripts and credential evaluation should demonstrate direct alignment between your degree field and the technical functions of the role.
