Verify your credential equivalency before applying
Your Chilean PT degree must satisfy the specialty occupation standard. Confirm your foreign credentials are evaluated as equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's or higher in physical therapy through a recognized credential assessment before approaching U.S. employers.
Obtain state licensure before the visa application
The H-1B1 Chile visa requires an active U.S. PT license in the state where you'll practice. Most consulate officers expect proof of licensure at interview, so clear the NPTE and state board requirements before your employer files the Labor Condition Application.
Target health systems with established LCA filing histories
Search the OFLC Wage Search to identify hospitals and rehabilitation networks that have filed Labor Condition Applications for physical therapist roles. Employers with prior LCA filings for your SOC code already understand the H-1B1 Chile process and are less likely to back out mid-hire.
Search for H-1B1 Chile sponsorship jobs on Migrate Mate
Filter by H-1B1 Chile visa and physical therapist roles on Migrate Mate to find employers whose DOL filing history confirms they sponsor Chilean nationals. Targeting verified sponsors cuts the time you spend educating recruiters about a visa type they've never encountered.
Clarify the consulate route with your employer early
Unlike H-1B, your H-1B1 Chile application goes directly to a U.S. consulate in Chile, not USCIS. Brief your hiring manager on this distinction upfront so HR doesn't route the filing through an H-1B petition process, which adds cost and unnecessary delay.
Benchmark your offer against the DOL prevailing wage level
Your employer must certify on the LCA that your salary meets the DOL prevailing wage for physical therapists in the job's geographic area. Use the OFLC Wage Search to check the Level I through Level IV thresholds for your SOC code before negotiating your offer letter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a physical therapist role qualify as a specialty occupation for the H-1B1 Chile visa?
Yes. Physical therapist positions require at minimum a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) or an equivalent degree, which satisfies the H-1B1 Chile specialty occupation standard. Your employer confirms this on the Labor Condition Application. If your Chilean degree is not a DPT, a foreign credential evaluation establishing equivalency to a U.S. professional degree in physical therapy is required before the consulate will approve the application.
How does the H-1B1 Chile visa differ from H-1B for physical therapists?
The H-1B1 Chile visa has no lottery, an annual cap of 1,400 that has never been exhausted, and consular processing in Chile rather than a USCIS petition. For physical therapists, this means a faster, more predictable path to starting work. The trade-off is that H-1B1 does not allow dual intent, so you cannot use it as a stepping stone to a green card without switching to a different immigrant visa category.
Which employers regularly sponsor H-1B1 Chile visas for physical therapists?
Hospital systems, inpatient rehabilitation centers, skilled nursing facilities, and outpatient orthopedic and sports medicine clinics are the most active sponsors for PT roles. You can identify employers with verified H-1B1 Chile filing histories by searching Migrate Mate, which filters listings by DOL Labor Condition Application data so you're only seeing employers who have actually sponsored this visa category.
Do I need a U.S. state PT license before the H-1B1 Chile visa interview?
Yes, in almost every case. The role must meet specialty occupation requirements at the time of application, and most U.S. states require an active license before a PT can practice. Consulate officers typically expect proof of licensure or a pending license with a confirmed NPTE pass date. Starting the Foreign Credentialing Commission on Physical Therapy process early reduces the risk of delays between your job offer and your visa appointment.
Can my employer file the H-1B1 Chile petition while I'm already working in the U.S. on a different visa?
Yes, but H-1B1 Chile does not support a change of status filed with USCIS from inside the U.S. the way H-1B does. Even if you're currently in valid status, you'll need to apply for the H-1B1 Chile visa at a consulate in Chile rather than adjusting status domestically. Your employer still files the LCA with DOL before your consulate appointment, but there is no USCIS petition involved in the process.
