Verify your role qualifies as specialty occupation
Pull the O*NET profile for Release Engineer and confirm your job duties map to the listed knowledge areas. The H-1B1 visa requires a bachelor's degree in a directly related field, so a degree in computer science, software engineering, or systems engineering is the clearest fit.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Search Migrate Mate to filter for companies that have filed Labor Condition Applications for Release Engineer or related DevOps roles. Prior LCA activity tells you the employer already understands the H-1B1 visa process and has a payroll infrastructure that meets DOL prevailing-wage requirements.
Request prevailing wage documentation before negotiating
Ask your prospective employer to confirm the wage level they'll certify on the LCA. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for your metro area and job zone before your offer conversation, so you enter negotiations knowing the DOL floor.
Clarify whether the employer understands H-1B1 versus H-1B
Many U.S. hiring managers assume visa sponsorship means H-1B lottery exposure. Explain that H-1B1 visa for Singaporean nationals requires no USCIS petition and no lottery, which eliminates the employer's biggest cost and scheduling risk and often changes the conversation.
Prepare your credentials packet before you receive an offer
Assemble your degree transcripts, a translated credential evaluation if your degree is from a Singaporean institution, and employment verification letters documenting your release engineering experience. Consular officers can request these during the H-1B1 visa interview, and having them ready avoids delays.
Confirm the employer's E-Verify enrollment before accepting
H-1B1 visa workers must be employed by an E-Verify participant. Ask the recruiter to confirm enrollment status before signing your offer letter. If the employer isn't enrolled, they'll need to register with E-Verify before your visa can be used for employment, which can delay your start date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Release Engineer work qualify as a specialty occupation for the H-1B1 Singapore visa?
Yes. Release engineering involves designing and managing CI/CD pipelines, build automation, and deployment infrastructure, work that requires at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field. The H-1B1 visa specialty occupation standard mirrors the H-1B definition, and Release Engineer consistently meets it. Your employer confirms this on the Labor Condition Application filed with DOL.
How does the H-1B1 Singapore visa differ from H-1B for a Release Engineer?
The H-1B1 visa skips the USCIS petition filing and lottery entirely. You apply directly at the U.S. Embassy in Singapore after your employer certifies the LCA with DOL. The annual cap is 5,400 visas reserved for Singaporeans, and it has never filled, so timing pressure is minimal. Each H-1B1 is granted in two-year increments and is renewable, whereas H-1B grants three-year initial periods.
How do I find employers who will sponsor an H-1B1 for a Release Engineer role?
Use Migrate Mate to search for Release Engineer and DevOps roles filtered by employers with documented LCA filing history. Companies that have previously filed LCAs for technical roles already have HR and legal processes in place for work visa sponsorship, which significantly reduces the friction of getting an offer that includes H-1B1 visa support.
Can I switch employers while on an H-1B1 Singapore visa?
Yes, but each employer change requires a new LCA certification and a new consular-processed H-1B1 visa application. Unlike H-1B, there's no USCIS portability rule that lets you start with a new employer the moment a transfer petition is filed. You'll need to complete the full process with your new employer before you can begin working for them.
What documents does a Release Engineer typically need for the H-1B1 consular interview?
You'll need your passport, the certified LCA, an employment offer letter specifying your role and wage, academic transcripts or a credential evaluation confirming your degree in a relevant field, and evidence of your professional background in release engineering such as employment letters or a resume documenting your CI/CD and build system experience. Prepare these before scheduling your embassy appointment.
