Verify your SDET role qualifies
Pull the O*NET profile for Software Quality Assurance Analysts and Testers to confirm your job duties align with specialty occupation criteria. H-1B1 visa requires a direct relationship between your degree field and the SDET role, so a general CS degree typically supports this better than an unrelated discipline.
Search for H-1B1 sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter your SDET job search on Migrate Mate by employers with active H-1B1 Singapore LCA filing history. This surfaces companies that have already cleared DOL's prevailing wage certification for quality engineering roles, cutting your targeting time significantly.
Target employers already filing LCAs for test engineers
Use the OFLC Wage Search to identify which companies have filed Labor Condition Applications for SDET or software QA job titles. Employers with recent LCA history understand the H-1B1 visa filing mechanics, which reduces the risk of sponsorship falling through mid-offer.
Benchmark your salary against DOL prevailing wages
Before entering salary negotiations, check the OFLC Wage Search for the Level II or Level III prevailing wage for your SDET role in your target metro area. Your offer must meet DOL's prevailing wage threshold, so knowing the floor protects you from accepting a non-qualifying offer.
Prepare your degree equivalency documentation early
Singaporean polytechnic diplomas or three-year degrees sometimes require a credential evaluation to satisfy the H-1B1 visa specialty occupation standard. Get a NACES-member evaluation done before your offer stage so you're not scrambling when the employer's immigration counsel requests it.
Clarify consulate-only processing with your employer
Unlike H-1B visa, H-1B1 visa is processed exclusively at a U.S. consulate in Singapore and cannot be changed to status inside the U.S. Confirm your prospective employer's legal team understands this distinction so they don't mistakenly file a USCIS petition and delay your start date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Software Development Engineer In Test role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B1 Singapore?
Yes, SDET roles typically qualify because they require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a related technical field. The key is that the job duties, including test architecture, automation framework development, and quality systems design, must require that specific degree field, not just any bachelor's degree. Your offer letter and employer's LCA filing should reflect this direct relationship.
How does the H-1B1 Singapore visa compare to H-1B for SDET professionals?
H-1B1 Singapore has no lottery, an annual cap of 5,400 visas that rarely fills, and is processed at the U.S. consulate in Singapore rather than through USCIS. For SDET professionals, this means no March registration window and no random selection risk. The trade-off is that H-1B1 doesn't allow dual intent, so maintaining clear nonimmigrant intent is essential at each consulate interview.
How do I find employers actively sponsoring H-1B1 Singapore visas for SDET jobs?
Migrate Mate lets you filter job opportunities by employers with verified H-1B1 visa LCA filing history for software quality and test engineering roles. This is more reliable than guessing from a company's general reputation, because it confirms the employer has already navigated DOL's Labor Condition Application process for positions like yours.
Can I switch employers on an H-1B1 Singapore visa if my SDET role changes?
Yes, but you need a new LCA and a new H-1B1 visa issued at the consulate for each employer change. Unlike H-1B portability under AC21, H-1B1 doesn't allow you to start working for a new employer while a petition is pending. Plan for a consulate appointment gap between your last day at the old employer and your first day at the new one.
What documentation should I prepare before applying for H-1B1 Singapore sponsorship as an SDET?
Gather your academic transcripts, degree certificates, and any credential evaluation if your Singaporean qualification is not a four-year bachelor's degree. You'll also need a detailed employment letter specifying your SDET duties, a certified LCA from DOL, and evidence connecting your degree field to the specific technical functions of the role. Prepare these before your consulate interview, not after your offer is signed.
