Verify your credentials meet U.S. standards
H-2B visa architects don't need U.S. licensure, but employers expect proof your foreign degree meets accreditation equivalency. Get a credential evaluation from a NACES-recognized evaluator before you start outreach so employers can confirm you meet their DOL-certified job requirements.
Target employers with active seasonal construction pipelines
H-2B sponsorship for architects concentrates in resort development, hospitality expansion, and seasonal infrastructure projects. Search for employers who've filed DOL temporary labor certifications in construction-adjacent industries rather than traditional architecture firms, which rarely file H-2B petitions.
Search verified H-2B employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter architect roles by employers with confirmed H-2B filing history. This cuts out speculative outreach and connects you directly to companies that have already navigated the DOL certification process for temporary design roles.
Align your job offer timing to the cap filing windows
The H-2B cap splits into two halves: 33,000 visas for October through March, and 33,000 for April through September. Get your employer to file with USCIS as close to the filing window opening as possible to avoid cap exhaustion, which happens within days in competitive years.
Confirm the employer's DOL prevailing wage obligation
Your employer must pay the prevailing wage for architect roles in the specific work location. Before accepting any offer, ask them to show you the certified LCA and use the OFLC Wage Search to independently verify the wage level listed matches your role and worksite.
Clarify project scope to satisfy temporary need documentation
DOL requires the employer to demonstrate the architect need is genuinely temporary, not a permanent staffing gap. Ask your employer to document the specific project start and end dates and tie your role to a defined seasonal construction phase, not ongoing design operations.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find architect jobs with H-2B visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find architect roles where the employer has confirmed H-2B filing history. General job boards don't filter by visa sponsorship type, so you can spend weeks applying to employers who've never filed an H-2B petition. Migrate Mate surfaces roles tied to employers who have already used the H-2B program for temporary construction and design staffing.
Does the H-2B annual cap affect when I can start an architect role?
Yes. The 66,000 annual H-2B cap is divided into two semi-annual allocations of 33,000 each. In recent years, cap numbers have been exhausted within days of the filing window opening. Your employer needs to file with USCIS precisely when the window opens for your intended start period, or your petition may be rejected for cap exhaustion even if it's otherwise approvable.
Do I need a U.S. architecture license to work on an H-2B visa?
Not necessarily, but it depends on the scope of the role. H-2B doesn't require U.S. licensure the way an employment-based immigrant visa might, but employers hiring architects for work requiring stamped drawings may need a licensed U.S. architect of record. Many H-2B architect roles focus on design support, drafting, or project coordination where licensure isn't legally required for the tasks assigned.
Can my H-2B architect visa be extended if the project runs longer than expected?
H-2B status is initially granted for the period of need certified by DOL, up to one year. Extensions are possible in increments of up to one year each, with a three-year maximum cumulative stay. Your employer must file an extension petition with USCIS before your current status expires and must demonstrate the temporary need continues for a defined additional period tied to the project.
