Translate your coaching credentials for U.S. employers
Gather your coaching certifications, referee licenses, and any sport-specific accreditations before outreach. U.S. seasonal employers need documented proof your qualifications meet their program's standards, not just a resume listing past teams.
Target employers who file early in the cap cycle
The H-2B visa cap splits into two halves: October 1 for winter-season starts and April 1 for summer. Assistant Coach roles at ski resorts fill the winter half fast, while summer camps compete for the April allocation. Apply to programs that advertise before those dates.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified H-2B sponsoring employers
Search Migrate Mate to identify seasonal sports and recreation employers with confirmed H-2B filing history. Filtering by verified sponsorship history cuts the time you'd otherwise spend cold-contacting programs with no track record of petitioning for foreign workers.
Confirm the job order is posted before accepting an offer
Your employer must file a job order with the State Workforce Agency and publish a DOL-approved prevailing wage before USCIS will accept the I-129 petition. Ask the program director for the SWA posting date so you know the filing timeline is on track.
Check the prevailing wage for your sport and state
OFLC Wage Search lets you look up the DOL-certified prevailing wage for coaching roles by Standard Occupational Classification code and geographic area. Verify the wage your employer offers meets or exceeds that figure before you sign any agreement.
Request premium processing if your program start date is fixed
Seasonal coaching roles have rigid start dates tied to camp sessions or competition schedules. If your employer files an I-129 close to the season opener, USCIS premium processing upgrades adjudication to 15 business days and protects your availability window.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Assistant Coach jobs with H-2B visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for Assistant Coach openings at employers with verified H-2B sponsorship history, so you're not wasting time on programs that have never petitioned for foreign workers. Seasonal sports programs, summer camps, and resort recreation departments are the most active H-2B filers for coaching roles, and filtering by those industries narrows your search to realistic opportunities.
How does the H-2B annual cap affect when I should apply for an Assistant Coach position?
USCIS caps H-2B visas at 66,000 per fiscal year, split into two 33,000-visa halves. Summer camp and youth sports programs compete for the April 1 allocation, which historically fills within days. Your employer must submit their temporary labor certification to the DOL at least 60 to 75 days before your season start date to have a realistic chance of securing a slot.
Does my coaching certification from another country count for H-2B Assistant Coach positions?
Foreign coaching certifications are generally accepted by U.S. seasonal employers, but the DOL's prevailing wage and recruitment requirements focus on the job duties, not a specific credential standard. Employers must document that no qualified U.S. workers were available. Bringing translated copies of your licenses and any sport-governing body credentials strengthens your employer's ability to justify the hire.
Can I extend my H-2B status if the coaching program runs longer than originally planned?
USCIS can extend H-2B status in one-year increments up to a total of three years, but your employer must file a new or amended I-129 before your current authorized period expires. Extensions require showing the temporary need still exists. After reaching the three-year limit, you must leave the United States for at least three consecutive months before any new H-2B petition can be filed on your behalf.
