Align your experience to seasonal revenue cycles
H-2B visa business development roles are tied to identifiable peak seasons, like ski resort winters or summer tourism surges. Frame your resume around the specific revenue period the employer needs covered, not year-round achievements that signal permanent hire expectations.
Search verified H-2B filers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter employers with confirmed H-2B DOL filing history in business development. This cuts out companies that express interest in sponsorship but have never actually run a temporary labor certification, saving you weeks of dead-end outreach.
Check the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating
Your employer must pay the DOL prevailing wage for your occupation and work location. Pull the OFLC Wage Search before any offer conversation so you know the floor rate and can confirm the employer's offer meets certification requirements.
Confirm your job title maps to an H-2B-eligible occupation
Not all business development titles qualify. Cross-reference your duties against the O*NET occupation profile to confirm the role is classified as temporary and non-agricultural. Misaligned job titles are a common reason DOL rejects temporary labor certification applications.
Apply during the correct cap-period filing window
The 66,000 annual H-2B cap splits into two 33,000-slot windows, October through March and April through September. Employers file petitions with USCIS only after DOL certifies the labor application, so your job search needs to start at least 75 to 90 days before your intended start date.
Get your employer to file the I-129 with supporting LCA documentation
Once DOL issues the temporary labor certification, your employer files Form I-129 with USCIS. Confirm they have the certified ETA 9142B in hand before the I-129 is submitted, since USCIS will deny the petition without it regardless of how strong the rest of the package is.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find business development jobs with H-2B sponsorship?
Use Migrate Mate to search for employers with verified H-2B DOL filing history in business development. Because H-2B sponsorship requires employers to run a full temporary labor certification through DOL before filing with USCIS, many companies list roles without ever completing that process. Filtering for employers who have actually filed cuts your search to realistic candidates.
Does the H-2B cap affect when I can start a business development role?
Yes. The 66,000-visa annual cap is divided into two 33,000-slot windows tied to start dates before or after April 1. Demand regularly exhausts both windows within days of opening. Your employer must have DOL certification in hand and file the I-129 with USCIS at or near the cap opening date to have any realistic chance of securing a visa number for your intended season.
Can a business development role qualify as a temporary H-2B position?
It can, but the employer must demonstrate to DOL that the need is genuinely temporary, tied to a recurring seasonal peak or a one-time event, not an ongoing operational function. Roles focused on managing client relationships during a defined season, such as a resort's summer sales cycle, typically satisfy this requirement. Roles framed as building long-term company infrastructure usually don't.
What documents should I prepare before a sponsor files my H-2B petition?
You'll need a valid passport, documentation of your business development experience and any relevant credentials, and a copy of the employer's certified ETA 9142B labor certification from DOL. Your employer assembles the I-129 petition, but having your background materials ready in advance prevents delays once DOL certification clears and the USCIS filing window opens.
