Pull your O*NET occupation profile first
Project Engineer falls under a specific SOC code that determines your prevailing wage tier. Pull the O*NET profile before applying so you can confirm whether a posted role matches the official occupational definition and qualifies under H-2B visa.
Verify the prevailing wage before accepting offers
Your employer must pay at least the DOL-certified prevailing wage for your county and occupation. Run the OFLC Wage Search for your target work location so you can spot offers that fall short before you sign anything.
Target employers with a temporary-need pattern
H-2B requires employers to demonstrate a genuine temporary need, like a seasonal construction push or a one-time infrastructure project. Target firms with recurring seasonal project cycles, since they've already navigated the labor certification process before.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified H-2B sponsors
Search Migrate Mate to identify employers with active H-2B Labor Condition Application history for engineering and construction roles. This filters out companies that lack the DOL filing track record needed to sponsor your position.
Understand the cap split when timing your job search
The 66,000 annual H-2B cap splits into two halves: 33,000 for workers arriving October through March and 33,000 for April through September. Construction-heavy summer projects compete in the same cap half, so target employers who file as early as USCIS allows.
Prepare a project-specific employment letter early
Your employer's DOL temporary labor certification filing must describe a specific project, location, and end date. Get a signed letter outlining your role, the project timeline, and why the need is temporary before your employer submits the certification.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Project Engineer jobs with H-2B visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search for Project Engineer roles with verified H-2B sponsorship history, filtering by employers who have filed DOL temporary labor certifications for engineering and construction positions. This removes the guesswork of approaching employers who lack experience with the H-2B process or who hire only domestic workers for project roles.
Does the H-2B annual cap affect my Project Engineer application?
Yes. The 66,000 annual H-2B cap is split into two halves by season, and construction and infrastructure employers competing for the summer half face the highest demand. Once a cap half is exhausted, USCIS stops accepting petitions until the next fiscal year. Your employer must file as soon as the filing window opens to avoid cap cutoffs that could delay your project start date.
What documents do I need to support an H-2B Project Engineer petition?
You'll need proof of your engineering credentials, such as a degree certificate or professional licensure, along with a valid passport and any prior U.S. visa documentation. Your employer supplies the certified DOL labor certification and a signed job offer letter describing the temporary project. If your credentials are from a non-U.S. institution, a credential evaluation confirming equivalency to a U.S. bachelor's degree strengthens the petition.
Can I extend my H-2B status if my construction project runs longer than expected?
USCIS allows H-2B extensions in one-year increments up to a maximum of three years, but your employer must demonstrate the temporary need continues and file before your current status expires. Extensions aren't automatic, and the three-year cap is cumulative. After reaching that limit, you must spend three consecutive months outside the U.S. before USCIS will approve a new H-2B petition for you.
