H-2B Visa Engineering Jobs
Engineering jobs with H-2B visa sponsorship cover seasonal roles in construction, infrastructure, and technical support where U.S. employers can't find enough qualified domestic workers. Your employer files the DOL labor certification before USCIS reviews the petition, and the 66,000 annual cap means timing your application to the correct semi-annual allocation matters.

Verify your engineering credentials translate
Pull your O*NET occupation profile for your specific engineering role before applying. Some positions require state licensure or certification that a foreign credential alone won't satisfy, and confirming this gap early saves you from rejections after an employer has already filed.
Target employers with prior H-2B history
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up certified labor condition applications in engineering and construction by employer name. Employers who have filed before understand the DOL process and are far less likely to back out mid-petition over unexpected paperwork.
Search H-2B engineering roles on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters job listings by visa sponsorship type, so you can find engineering employers actively seeking H-2B visa workers without sorting through roles that won't sponsor. Start your search there before approaching companies directly.
Apply before the semi-annual cap closes
The 66,000 annual H-2B cap splits into roughly 33,000 per half-year, and engineering-adjacent construction roles fill the summer allocation fast. USCIS stops accepting petitions once each allocation is exhausted, so your employer needs to file as early as the filing window opens.
Confirm your employer can document seasonal need
H-2B requires your employer to prove the engineering work is genuinely temporary, not a permanent business function. Ask directly whether they have prior DOL temporary labor certifications or legal support lined up, since a weak seasonal-need argument is the most common reason certifications get denied.
Get your job offer in writing before anything else
DOL won't certify a temporary labor application without a valid, specific job offer that names your role, worksite, and start date. A verbal agreement isn't enough. Confirm the offer letter is ready before your employer engages any filing agent or attorney.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find engineering jobs that offer H-2B visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to search engineering roles filtered by H-2B sponsorship. Beyond that, focus on employers in seasonal construction, infrastructure maintenance, and technical support who have filed H-2B certifications with the DOL before. The OFLC Wage Search lets you look up prior labor certifications by employer and occupation to identify who has sponsored these roles in the past.
How does the H-2B cap affect my engineering job application timeline?
The H-2B visa program has a 66,000 annual cap split into two semi-annual allocations of roughly 33,000 each. Engineering and construction roles concentrated in summer seasons compete heavily for the April-to-September allocation. Your employer must file with USCIS as early as six months before your start date, and once the cap is reached, USCIS issues no further approvals until the next allocation period opens.
Does my engineering degree or credential need to be evaluated for an H-2B application?
H-2B doesn't require a degree the way H-1B visa does, but some engineering roles involve state-regulated activities where your employer must confirm you meet local licensing or certification requirements before DOL will certify the labor application. If your role involves supervised construction oversight, permitting, or any licensed engineering function, have your foreign credential reviewed against the requirements of the state where you'll be working.
Can I switch engineering employers while on an H-2B visa?
H-2B status is tied to a specific employer, worksite, and approved period of employment. If you want to change employers, the new employer must file a separate H-2B petition and obtain a new DOL temporary labor certification before you can legally begin work. You can't transfer an existing H-2B approval to a different company the way some other visa categories allow.
