Head Chef Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a head chef in Illinois?
Becoming a head chef in Illinois typically starts with completing a culinary arts program at a culinary school or community college, followed by progressive kitchen experience. Illinois does not require a state-issued chef license, but the Illinois Department of Public Health requires at least one certified food protection manager on site, so earning a recognized manager-level food safety certification is a practical necessity. Most candidates move up through sous chef or kitchen manager roles before reaching a head chef position.
Which companies hire head chefs in Illinois?
Employers hiring head chefs in Illinois right now include Wolfoods, MyoMeals, and Sugar Bliss, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of November 2026. Illinois's dense mix of independent restaurant groups, major hotel brands, and large contract foodservice operators means openings appear across a wide range of concepts and service styles.
Which Illinois cities have the most head chef jobs?
Chicago, Normal, and Wilmette account for the largest share of head chef openings in Illinois. Chicago drives the bulk of demand through its concentration of independent restaurants, hotel food and beverage programs, and corporate dining accounts, while suburban markets like Rosemont and Naperville generate consistent volume from conference center hotels and large employer campuses.
Are there remote head chef jobs in Illinois?
Yes, but they're rare. Head chef work is fundamentally hands-on, requiring daily kitchen presence to lead a brigade, manage service, and maintain quality standards. About 0% of head chef openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of November 2026, and those tend to be consulting, menu development, or culinary content roles rather than operational kitchen positions.
How can I get hired as a head chef in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a line cook or prep cook role in a respected Illinois kitchen and building toward sous chef. Large operators like Hyatt, Aramark, and Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises run structured culinary training and internal promotion tracks that give motivated cooks a clear path upward. Earning a food protection manager certification recognized by the Illinois Department of Public Health immediately signals seriousness to hiring managers and satisfies a practical legal requirement.
