Restaurant General Manager Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a restaurant general manager in Illinois?
Most restaurant general managers in Illinois work their way up through assistant manager and kitchen or front-of-house supervisor roles before stepping into a GM position. Illinois does not issue a GM-specific state license, but operators widely require the Illinois Food Service Sanitation Manager Certificate, earned by passing an exam through an Illinois Department of Public Health-approved provider such as the National Restaurant Association's ServSafe program. A bachelor's degree in hospitality management or business strengthens candidacy, though many employers prioritize hands-on management experience.
Which companies hire restaurant general managers in Illinois?
Companies currently hiring restaurant general managers in Illinois include Taco Bell, Jersey Mike's, and Sonic Drive-In, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Illinois's dense concentration of national chain headquarters, independent restaurant groups, and hotel food and beverage operations means openings appear across a wide range of employer types and price points.
Which Illinois cities have the most restaurant general manager jobs?
Chicago, Urbana, and Champaign post the most restaurant general manager openings in Illinois. Chicago dominates by volume because of its size, tourism base, and the headquarters presence of major restaurant groups, while suburban markets like Naperville and Rosemont generate strong demand from corporate dining facilities, convention center hotels, and dense retail and entertainment corridors that anchor large-volume locations.
Are there remote restaurant general manager jobs in Illinois?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of restaurant general manager openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, which reflects the fundamentally on-site nature of the role. The portions of the work most likely to be handled off-site are administrative tasks like scheduling, vendor negotiations, and financial reporting, while floor leadership, staff development, and service oversight require in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a restaurant general manager in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into a shift supervisor or assistant manager role at a high-volume Illinois operator and building measurable results in labor scheduling, food cost reduction, and team retention before pursuing a GM title. Large Illinois-based groups such as Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises and national chains with strong Illinois footprints routinely promote from within and offer structured management development tracks for assistant managers ready to advance. Earning the Illinois Department of Public Health-approved Food Service Sanitation Manager Certificate early signals seriousness to hiring managers and removes a common barrier to promotion.
Where can I find and apply to restaurant general manager jobs in Illinois?
