Restaurant General Manager Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a restaurant general manager in Virginia?
Most restaurant general managers in Virginia advance through progressive kitchen or front-of-house roles, moving from shift supervisor to assistant manager before reaching the general manager level. Virginia does not require a state-issued license to manage a restaurant, but employers consistently expect a ServSafe Food Manager certification, which is accepted statewide. A bachelor's degree in hospitality management from programs at Virginia Tech, George Mason University, or James Madison University strengthens candidacy, especially for corporate dining and full-service concepts.
Which companies hire restaurant general managers in Virginia?
Employers hiring restaurant general managers in Virginia right now include Cook Out Restaurants, Taco Bell, and Summerwood Corporation, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's concentration of hotel-anchored food and beverage outlets, national casual dining franchises, and corporate cafeteria operators means hiring activity stays consistent well beyond the largest restaurant chains.
Which Virginia cities have the most restaurant general manager jobs?
The cities with the most restaurant general manager openings in Virginia are Richmond, Norfolk, and Petersburg. Northern Virginia's proximity to Washington, D.C. sustains the highest volume of full-service and corporate dining demand, Richmond's growing independent and fast-casual dining scene drives strong hiring in the center of the state, and Virginia Beach draws consistent openings through its tourism and resort hospitality economy.
Are there remote restaurant general manager jobs in Virginia?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of restaurant general manager openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, which reflects the hands-on, floor-present nature of the role. The portions of the job most likely to carry remote flexibility are administrative responsibilities such as scheduling, vendor coordination, and reporting, not the daily operations management that defines the position.
How can I get hired as a restaurant general manager in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic path is moving into an assistant general manager or shift supervisor role first, which large Virginia employers use as a direct pipeline to general manager positions. Darden Restaurants and Delaware North both run structured management development programs at their Virginia locations that are designed for candidates without prior GM experience. Earning a ServSafe Food Manager certification before applying signals operational seriousness, and a hospitality management degree from a Virginia university gives candidates an edge for corporate and hotel food and beverage openings.
Where can I find and apply to restaurant general manager jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to restaurant general manager jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings across full-service, fast-casual, corporate dining, and hotel food and beverage operations. Search the roles that match your experience level and location preference, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
