Tips for Your Headache Specialist Job Search
Quantify your procedural headache experience
List specific procedures on your CV, such as nerve blocks, Botox injections for chronic migraine, and lumbar punctures. Headache specialist hiring committees look for documented procedural volume, not just department names or general neurology experience.
Highlight fellowship training explicitly
If you completed a headache medicine fellowship, name the program and its UCNS accreditation status on your CV. Many postings filter for this credential before a human reviewer ever sees your application, so placement matters.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists headache specialist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target postings by practice setting intentionally
Academic centers prioritize research output and teaching responsibilities, while private neurology groups weight patient throughput and payer mix experience. Tailor your cover letter to the specific setting so your application reads as a match, not a generic submission.
Prepare for multidisciplinary case discussions
Headache specialist interviews often include a clinical vignette or multidisciplinary case review. Practice articulating your diagnostic reasoning for refractory migraine, secondary headache differentials, and your approach to medication overuse headache before the interview stage.
Negotiate call structure alongside compensation
Headache specialists frequently work in practices where call duty is minimal but infusion center coverage varies. Ask about on-call expectations, infusion oversight responsibilities, and weekend coverage before accepting an offer to avoid misaligned workload expectations.
Headache Specialist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most headache specialists?
The companies hiring the most headache specialists right now include Oregon Health & Science University, The University of Kansas Health System, and Allina Health, with the largest share of openings in Florida, Texas, and Oregon, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Academic health systems and large multispecialty groups tend to post the highest volume of headache specialist roles nationally.
How many headache specialist jobs are remote?
About 0% of headache specialist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the limited but growing telehealth adoption in outpatient neurology. Subspecialty areas like headache consultation, follow-up migraine management, and patient education tend to be most compatible with remote or hybrid arrangements, while procedural roles require in-person presence.
How do you become a headache specialist?
You become a headache specialist by completing medical school, then a neurology residency, and then a dedicated headache medicine fellowship at a program recognized by the United Council for Neurological Subspecialties. After fellowship, you can sit for UCNS certification in headache medicine, which validates your subspecialty expertise to employers and credentialing bodies across practice settings.
Can you get hired as a headache specialist without fellowship training?
Some community neurology practices and general neurology groups hire neurologists with strong headache interest but no formal fellowship if the candidate demonstrates relevant procedural experience, such as Botox administration and nerve blocks, and treats a meaningful proportion of headache patients. Academic centers and dedicated headache programs almost always require fellowship completion or active UCNS candidacy before extending an offer.
What does the headache specialist interview process look like?
The interview process typically begins with a phone or video screen with a physician recruiter or department chair, followed by an on-site visit that includes meetings with neurology faculty, clinic leadership, and sometimes administrators. You'll often discuss a clinical case, review your procedural experience, and tour infusion center or clinic facilities. Offer discussions usually follow within a few weeks of the site visit.
Where can I find and apply to headache specialist jobs?
You can find and apply to headache specialist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search the available roles, find the ones that fit your training and practice preferences, and apply directly to each listing without leaving the platform.
