Health Data Analyst Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a health data analyst in Virginia?
Health data analyst is not a state-licensed role in Virginia, so there is no board exam or state registration required to work in this field. Most Virginia employers expect a bachelor's degree in health informatics, biostatistics, public health, or a related discipline, and many prefer or require a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credential from AHIMA, which is widely recognized by Virginia health systems and insurers.
How much do health data analysts make in Virginia?
Health data analysts in Virginia earn a median of about $126,430 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $76,420 for the lowest 10% to over $207,890 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire health data analysts in Virginia?
Employers hiring health data analysts in Virginia right now include Capital One, Information Technology Senior Management Forum, and TRAX International, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's concentration of federal health agencies, large integrated health systems, and defense health contractors makes it one of the more active state markets for this role year-round.
Which Virginia cities have the most health data analyst jobs?
McLean, Arlington, and Richmond have the most health data analyst openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia's density of federal health agencies and large contractors drives the volume there, while Richmond's concentration of major health systems and insurance carriers anchors demand in Central Virginia, and Hampton Roads reflects both military health programs and regional hospital networks.
Are there remote health data analyst jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than most fields. Health data analysis is largely desk-based work that translates well to remote and hybrid arrangements. About 63% of health data analyst openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how broadly the role has shifted away from on-site requirements. Roles focused on reporting, population health modeling, and claims analytics tend to be the most consistently remote.
How can I get hired as a health data analyst in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a health information technician or junior analyst role at a Virginia hospital system or health plan, where familiarity with EHR platforms like Epic or Cerner combined with an RHIT credential can substitute for years of experience. Inova, VCU Health, and Sentara run analyst associate or data operations programs that regularly bring in candidates from adjacent roles such as medical coder, billing analyst, or care coordinator. Building a portfolio of SQL queries and a Tableau or Power BI dashboard using publicly available CMS or Virginia Department of Health datasets strengthens an application considerably.
Where can I find and apply to health data analyst jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to health data analyst jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings across health systems, insurers, federal contractors, and other employers in the state. Find roles that fit your experience and apply directly from the listing.
