Lead Low Voltage Installation Technician

Job Description

Metro Detroit Integrated Systems (MDIS) is hiring a Lead Low Voltage Installation Technician who has at least 2–3 years of industry experience.

We are looking for somebody who is not only skilled in installing low voltage systems, but is also skilled in finishing projects. Finishing a project means configuring and programming the equipment, assigning IP addresses, testing that everything works, troubleshooting and resolving any issues, creating system documentation, and performing customer training on the new system.

MDIS installs and services security cameras, access control, audiovisual (AV) systems, paging systems, data cabling, and fiber-optic cabling for commercial and government customers throughout Metro Detroit.

This position is a great fit for a “nerd” who enjoys technology, working with their hands, and figuring out how things work. You should have a general understanding of computers and networking. You should be comfortable using hand tools, working on ladders and lifts, and performing physical installations. You should be comfortable working alone, with a partner, or leading a small team. We want someone who takes initiative, reads installation manuals, calls manufacturer support when needed to troubleshoot problems, and keeps jobs moving.

Job Responsibilities

We need someone who can take an installation from its start all the way through setup, configuration, testing, and training the customer.

Responsibilities include:

• Reviewing scopes of work, schematics, drawings, and equipment requirements to understand how the completed system needs to function.
• Installing, wiring, and organizing low-voltage equipment, cabling, and equipment racks.
• Terminating, labeling, and testing copper and fiber cabling using the appropriate test equipment, correcting issues and troubleshooting, and saving test results.
• Using basic networking knowledge to assign IP addresses, check subnet and gateway settings, connect devices, and troubleshoot communication problems.
• Setting up network switches, wireless bridges, and PoE connections and confirming devices are powered and communicating.
• Configuring cameras, recording systems, audiovisual equipment, access control, and other devices within your experience level, with team support for advanced programming.
• Setting up software, user accounts, recording schedules, and customer access as needed.
• Troubleshooting wiring, network, software, and equipment issues using test tools, manuals, AI tools, manufacturer support, and help from teammates.
• Testing the system’s actual operation after installing it. For example, confirming cameras record and play back, card readers unlock the correct doors, and audio and video work as intended.
• Checking your team’s work and keeping customers, account managers, and project managers informed of progress, material needs, and issues. This is done using written communication and photographs.
• Closing out jobs by completing punch-list items, confirming everything works, training the customer, and submitting photos, cable test results, configuration details, and a final job update.
• Following safe work practices and keeping installations, job sites, and company vehicles clean and organized.

Qualifications

• At minimum, 2-3 years of experience in low-voltage installation or a related field.
• Ability to complete common low voltage installation tasks without step-by-step direction.
• Ability to organize a smaller job and provide direction to a helper or small crew.
• Basic understanding of computers, IP addresses, networking, and device setup.
• Good troubleshooting skills and a willingness to research problems and contact technical support.
• Proficiency with hand and power tools.
• Comfortable working on ladders and lifts and able to safely lift and carry tools, ladders, cable, and equipment.
• Comfortable communicating with customers and coworkers.
• Attention to detail, reliable attendance, and pride in doing clean, quality work.
• Valid driver’s license with a good driving record and reliable transportation.
• Authorized to work in the United States.
• Willingness to occasionally travel or work outside normal business hours when needed.

Helpful Experience:

Experience in every area is not required, but experience in one or more area is a great help:

• Commercial data and fiber-optic cabling
• Security cameras, recording systems, and video management software
• Access control and intercom systems
• Commercial audiovisual systems and distributed audio systems
• Paging and sound-masking systems
• Networking, network switches, Wi-Fi access points, wireless bridges, and PoE devices.
• Equipment racks, cable tray, conduit, and cable management

Familiarity with brands such as Axis Communications, Digital Watchdog, Avigilon, Q-SYS, Atlona, JBL, Shure, Bogen, Aiphone, Ubiquiti, Aruba, or Cisco is helpful but not required.

BICSI, AVIXA, CEDIA, and manufacturer training or certifications are a plus. MDIS provides paid training opportunities to help employees build their skills.
