Candidates must pass the relevant state licensing exam covering the lines of authority they intend to sell, such as Property and Casualty or Life and Health. Most captive carriers also require a business plan review and a capital commitment before approving agency ownership, while independent ownership typically involves acquiring an existing book of business or contracting directly with wholesale markets.
