Insurance Consultant Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become an insurance consultant in California?
You become an insurance consultant in California by obtaining a producer license through the California Department of Insurance. The path requires completing pre-licensing education for your chosen lines of authority, passing the California licensing exam administered by PSI, and submitting a license application to CDI. Most employers expect coverage in property and casualty, life, or health lines depending on the specialty, and a bachelor's degree in business, finance, or risk management strengthens your candidacy.
How much do insurance consultants make in California?
Insurance consultants in California earn a median of about $76,120 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $38,560 for the lowest 10% to over $165,430 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire insurance consultants in California?
Employers hiring insurance consultants in California right now include USI Insurance Services, Farmers Insurance, and Alliant Insurance Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's size and regulatory complexity make it one of the most active states for brokerage firms, regional carriers, and independent agencies seeking licensed consultants across commercial and personal lines.
Which California cities have the most insurance consultant jobs?
San Francisco, Irvine, and Los Angeles have the most insurance consultant openings in California. Los Angeles anchors demand through its concentration of corporate headquarters, entertainment industry risk needs, and large brokerage offices, while San Francisco draws hiring from financial services and technology firms requiring specialized commercial and professional liability coverage, and San Diego reflects steady demand from healthcare institutions and mid-market businesses.
Are there remote insurance consultant jobs in California?
Yes, and they're more available than in many fields. About 26% of insurance consultant openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting that much of the work involves client calls, coverage analysis, and proposal writing that translates well to distributed settings. Client-facing new business development roles tend to require more in-person presence, while renewal management and benefits consulting positions are the most frequently offered remotely.
How can I get hired as an insurance consultant in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting as a licensed insurance agent or account associate at a California brokerage or regional carrier, then building toward a consulting role. Large California employers such as regional Aon and Marsh offices, as well as mid-size independent agencies, hire entry-level associates who hold a current CDI producer license. Earning a Certified Insurance Service Representative designation adds credibility early on, and lateral moves from customer service, underwriting support, or claims roles at California carriers are a well-recognized bridge into consulting.
Where can I find and apply to insurance consultant jobs in California?
You can find and apply to insurance consultant jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings from employers hiring now. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and the lines of authority on your CDI license, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
