Interior Designer Jobs in Washington: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a interior designer in Washington?
Washington State requires interior designers who use the protected title 'Registered Interior Designer' to hold a credential through the Washington State Department of Licensing, which recognizes NCIDQ certification as the qualifying exam. Most candidates complete an accredited bachelor's or master's degree in interior design, accumulate the required hours of supervised work experience under the NCIDQ's IDEP or IDPX pathway, and then pass the full NCIDQ examination before applying for Washington state registration.
How much do interior designers make in Washington?
Interior designers in Washington earn a median of about $76,570 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $48,050 for the lowest 10% to over $109,820 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire interior designers in Washington?
Employers hiring interior designers in Washington right now include ZGF Architects, Weidner Apartment Homes, and BRS, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of November 2026. Washington's concentration of corporate campuses, hospitality groups, and multifamily developers means hiring often flows through both large architecture and design firms and in-house design teams at major corporations headquartered in the Seattle metro.
Which Washington cities have the most interior designer jobs?
Seattle, Kirkland, and Silverdale account for the most interior designer openings in Washington. Seattle drives the largest volume because of its dense cluster of tech headquarters, hotel projects, and commercial office tenants, while Bellevue's rapid mixed-use and corporate development and Tacoma's growing multifamily and civic sector support consistent demand in those markets as well.
Are there remote interior designer jobs in Washington?
Yes, but they're limited. About 43% of interior designer openings tied to Washington are remote or hybrid as of November 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of most design work, which involves site visits, material selection, and contractor coordination. The tasks most likely to be performed remotely are concept development, space planning, documentation, and client presentation work rather than full project delivery.
How can I get hired as a interior designer in Washington with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an internship or junior designer role at a mid-size commercial or residential firm in the Seattle or Bellevue market, where firms regularly hire recent graduates to support senior designers on documentation and FF&E coordination. Completing your NCIDQ-qualifying education at a program accredited by CIDA, building a portfolio of studio and any freelance projects, and pursuing an internship through Washington firms affiliated with the American Society of Interior Designers' Washington chapter all give candidates a concrete edge before their first paid role.
Where can I find and apply to interior designer jobs in Washington?
