Research patient panel and call schedule
Before your interview, ask specifically about panel size, nocturnist coverage, and expected call frequency. These details shape burnout risk and compensation value far more than base salary alone, and preparing smart questions signals clinical maturity to search committees.
Prepare for committee and case-based interviews
Many internist searches include a panel interview with department chiefs, nursing leadership, and administrative staff. Practice presenting a complex, multi-system case concisely, because groups often use that format to assess clinical reasoning and communication simultaneously.
Negotiate beyond base compensation
CME allowances, malpractice tail coverage, loan forgiveness eligibility, and productivity bonuses vary widely between offers. Compare the full package in writing and clarify which provisions end if you leave early, since tail coverage gaps alone can create significant financial exposure.
