IT Project Manager Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become an it project manager in Virginia?
There is no state-issued license required to work as an it project manager in Virginia, but employers consistently expect the Project Management Professional credential issued by the Project Management Institute. Most paths start with a bachelor's degree in IT, computer science, or business, followed by documented project hours and the PMP exam. Virginia's heavy federal contracting sector also rewards candidates who have completed a CompTIA Security Plus certification or a government-focused program management course.
How much do IT project managers make in Virginia?
IT project managers in Virginia earn a median of about $120,840 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $68,020 for the lowest 10% to over $179,970 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire it project managers in Virginia?
Employers hiring it project managers in Virginia right now include AT&T, ValidaTek, and Guidehouse, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's dense federal contracting ecosystem means many of the most active employers are large defense and technology services firms with long-standing government agency relationships in Northern Virginia and the broader D.C. metro area.
Which Virginia cities have the most it project manager jobs?
Arlington, Chantilly, and Vienna have the most it project manager openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia dominates because of its concentration of federal agencies, defense contractors, and cloud infrastructure firms, while Richmond draws demand from state government IT programs and large financial services employers, and Hampton Roads generates steady openings through Navy and military installation technology programs.

About 53% of it project manager openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how naturally the role fits distributed and asynchronous work. How can I get hired as an it project manager in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a junior project coordinator or IT business analyst role, which large Virginia federal contractors such as Leidos and Booz Allen Hamilton regularly post as feeder positions into full project management tracks.
