Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Partnerships Manager
Align your credentials with Trainee requirements
Document at least one year of post-secondary education plus related work experience, or five years of professional experience in business development or partnerships. Designated sponsors require this proof before issuing a DS-2019 for the Trainee category.
Target host employers with structured training programs
Partnerships Manager roles qualify under J-1 only when the host employer can demonstrate a genuine training component. Prioritize organizations with documented mentorship structures, cross-functional rotations, or formal business development training frameworks already in place.
Search for J-1-compatible roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Partnerships Manager positions at U.S. employers experienced with international exchange visitors. Narrowing by companies with J-1 hosting history saves significant time before you approach a designated sponsor.
Prepare a detailed training plan before sponsor outreach
Designated sponsors require a completed Training or Internship Placement Plan outlining specific learning objectives, supervision structure, and weekly activities. A vague plan is the leading reason sponsors delay or reject DS-2019 applications for business-category candidates.
Clarify the two-year home residency requirement early
Certain Trainee and Specialist placements trigger the two-year home-country physical presence requirement under INA Section 212(e), particularly if your home government funded your exchange. Confirm your eligibility for a waiver before accepting an offer to avoid complications with future U.S. visa applications.
Negotiate the training plan scope during offer discussions
The DS-2019 start date cannot precede your signed Training Placement Plan, so get the host employer to finalize training objectives in writing before you submit to a designated sponsor. Delays here push back your entire J-1 timeline by weeks.

Find Partnerships Manager JobsPartnerships Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Partnerships Manager role?
Most Partnerships Manager candidates fall under the J-1 Trainee or Specialist category. Trainee applies if you have a relevant degree plus at least one year of related work experience, or five or more years of professional experience in lieu of a degree. Specialist applies to recognized experts in a narrow field. Your designated sponsor determines the appropriate category based on your background and the host employer's training program.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a Partnerships Manager position?
The J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not the hiring company. Organizations such as CIEE, Cultural Vistas, and AIPT issue the DS-2019 form that authorizes your exchange visitor status. The employer where you work is the host, not the sponsor. The host and the designated sponsor must both approve your participation before you can begin.
How do I find Partnerships Manager roles where the employer already understands J-1 hosting?
Migrate Mate is the recommended starting point for identifying U.S. employers with demonstrated experience hosting international exchange visitors in business-category roles. Focusing on employers already familiar with J-1 obligations shortens negotiation time considerably, since they understand the training plan requirements and coordination with a designated sponsor that the process involves.
Can I convert my J-1 status to an H-1B while working as a Partnerships Manager?
A change of status from J-1 to H-1B is possible, but only if you are not subject to the two-year home-country physical presence requirement under INA Section 212(e). If you are subject to that requirement, you must either complete the two years abroad, obtain a waiver, or meet a limited exception before USCIS will approve a change of status or immigrant visa application.
What happens if the host employer cannot develop a qualifying training plan?
If the host employer cannot document specific learning objectives, supervision structures, and skill-development activities distinct from ordinary employment, the designated sponsor will not issue a DS-2019. Partnerships Manager roles must demonstrate genuine training value beyond day-to-day job duties. In that situation, you would need to either restructure the role with the employer or identify a different host organization through Migrate Mate that already has a compliant training framework.
