Tips for Your Learning And Development Job Search
Tailor your resume to training outcomes
Hiring managers in learning and development want to see measurable impact, not just program names. Replace activity-based bullets like 'delivered onboarding training' with outcome statements that show completion rates, knowledge retention scores, or time-to-productivity improvements you drove.
Build a sample portfolio before applying
Many learning and development roles require a portfolio during the screening process, not just at the interview. Prepare two or three sample deliverables, such as a storyboard, a facilitator guide, or a micro-learning module, so you can share them on request without delay.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists learning and development openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter openings by authoring tool requirements
Job postings for learning and development roles often list specific authoring tools as required, not preferred. Check each posting for tools like Articulate 360, Adobe Captivate, or Rise before applying, and prioritize openings where your existing toolkit matches rather than retrofitting your resume.
Prepare a design philosophy statement for interviews
Interviewers in learning and development frequently ask how you decide what kind of training to build and why. Draft a concise two-to-three sentence statement explaining your instructional approach, grounded in a framework you actually use, so your answer sounds practiced rather than improvised.
Negotiate scope before accepting a title
Learning and development job titles vary wildly across organizations, so the same title can mean solo practitioner at one company and team lead at another. Before accepting an offer, confirm whether the role involves vendor management, budget ownership, or team oversight so the scope matches your goals.
Learning And Development Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most learning and developments?
The companies hiring the most learning and developments right now include The Western and Southern Life Insurance Company, McDonald's, and Brandeis University, with the largest share of openings in Texas, California, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Healthcare systems, large financial institutions, and enterprise technology companies tend to maintain the most consistent hiring volume for these roles.
How many learning and development jobs are remote?
About 14% of learning and development openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the field's long-standing use of virtual delivery tools. Instructional design and e-learning development roles tend to have the highest remote availability, while facilitation-heavy roles and leadership development positions more often require on-site presence.
How do you become a learning and development?
Most learning and development professionals start with a degree in education, instructional design, organizational psychology, or human resources. From there, you build practical skills in needs analysis, course design, and facilitation, ideally supported by hands-on projects or volunteer training work. Earning a credential from ATD or completing a recognized instructional design certificate program strengthens early applications. Entry-level roles in training coordination or HR generalist work are common starting points before moving into dedicated learning and development positions.
How do you get hired in learning and development with little experience?
Candidates with limited direct experience often break in by leading volunteer training initiatives, building a small portfolio of self-initiated projects, or moving laterally from a related role such as HR coordinator, teacher, or subject-matter expert. Employers care as much about how you think through a learning problem as about formal experience, so being able to walk through a design decision clearly in an interview carries significant weight.
What does the learning and development interview process look like?
Learning and development interviews typically include a phone or video screen with a recruiter, followed by a hiring manager conversation focused on your instructional design approach and past projects. Many organizations then ask for a portfolio review or a take-home design challenge before a final panel interview with stakeholders from HR, operations, or the business unit the role supports. Being prepared to explain your design rationale out loud is as important as the deliverable itself.
Where can I find and apply to learning and development jobs?
You can find and apply to learning and development jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search for roles that match your experience level and specialization, then apply directly to each listing. No separate sign-up step is required to apply, and you can apply to multiple roles as you find ones that fit.
