Job Summary
The University of Michigan is seeking motivated applicants for a one-year Advanced Training position in aortic surgery with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027. This position is classified as a Clinical Lecturer (faculty) role in the Department of Cardiac Surgery. The expectations for the training experience include a full understanding of the anatomy, physiology, and planning of specialized aortic and other advanced cardiothoracic operations as well as the technical performance of these procedures. This role will provide the individual with training, education, and technical skills in the preoperative evaluation and planning, operative management (open and endovascular), postoperative care and follow-up of these patients. The trainee will be fully immersed in a collaborative environment that allows for a truly multidisciplinary approach to the care of each individual patient. This will occur in the setting of multidisciplinary conferences that will take place in a clinical and academic environment. The aortic advanced trainee is expected to attend mandatory teaching conference including didactic teaching conferences, simulator labs, journal clubs, and morbidity and mortality conference.
Responsibilities*
- Treatment of aortic disease (aneurysms and dissection) utilizing both open and endovascular techniques.
- Preoperative evaluation, operative management, and postoperative patient care of complex adult surgical conditions, including major thoracic aortic surgery and complex/high risk cardiac surgery.
- Serve as surgical first assist on complex aortic procedures under the direction of the medical director and other cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons.
- Train other cardiothoracic surgery residents on the diagnosis and treatment of complex aortic disease.
- Interpretation and assessment of diagnostic imaging studies.
- Participation in both emergent and elective aortic and adult cardiac procedures;
- Independent completion of critical portions of the complex aortic procedures (i.e., key anastomoses, performance of re-operative sternotomy).
- Additional education and scholarly pursuits as determined by the medical director to support the mission of the Frankel Cardiovascular Center.
Required Qualifications*
- Candidates must have completed an American Board of Thoracic Surgery approved training program in cardiothoracic surgery.
- Applicants must be Board Certified or Board Eligible via the pathways stipulated by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
- Candidates must be eligible for a medical license in the state of Michigan.
- Candidates must be US Citizens or US Permanent Residents (Green Card) or eligible for H-1B sponsorship.
- Candidates must be able to pass a background check and drug screening.
