Tips for Your Legal Intern Internship Search
Apply earlier than the semester suggests
Large law firms and corporate legal departments fill summer cohorts the preceding fall, often by November. Smaller employers and co-op programs post closer to start dates. Map out your target roles at the start of each term and submit materials as soon as postings appear, not when the deadline is days away.
Build a writing sample before you apply
Hiring teams for legal intern roles want something to read, not just a list of classes. Draft a memo, case summary, or research brief from a class assignment or moot problem. Polish one piece until it demonstrates clear analysis and precise writing, then make it easy to share, whether as a PDF attachment or a link.
Work your campus network and apply directly at the same time
Career fairs surface structured programs tied to your school, and attorneys who recruit on campus often move faster for students they meet in person. Professors and career center advisors frequently know which employers recruit from your program before roles post publicly. Applying directly to smaller firms and legal departments alongside campus activity reaches employers who never attend fairs.
Practice case analysis out loud before your screen
Legal intern interviews often include a fact-pattern or hypothetical that you walk through in real time. Practicing out loud matters because interviewers weigh how you structure your reasoning, not just the conclusion you reach. Work through practice scenarios with a classmate or record yourself, and get comfortable explaining your logic step by step under time pressure.
Target structured 1L and 2L summer associate pipelines early
Major law firms run formal summer associate programs built to train people new to legal practice. These programs recruit on a defined calendar, often opening applications before October for the following summer. Identify the firms whose practice areas match your interests, note their recruiting timelines, and submit in the first application window.
Set your work-type filter before you start searching
On-site roles are 83% of the legal intern internships listed here. Decide what you can realistically commit to before you begin reviewing postings, then filter by location and work type so you're not sorting through roles you cannot take. Filtering first saves time and keeps your focus on opportunities you'll actually pursue.
Legal Intern Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a legal intern internship?
Lead with coursework and projects rather than work history, since hiring teams expect limited experience at the intern level. For legal intern candidates, a writing sample, drafted brief, or documented research memo gives recruiters something concrete to assess. Pair direct applications with campus career fairs, where recruiters often move faster for students they meet in person.
Can a legal intern internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. What actually drives it is consistent performance on real assignments, available headcount on the team, and how early you signal interest in returning. Position for a return offer by treating every task as a work sample, but keep applying elsewhere so you're not counting on one outcome.
When should I apply for legal intern internships?
Earlier than most candidates expect. Large law firms and corporate legal departments recruit summer interns the preceding fall, sometimes as early as September or October. Smaller companies, government offices, and co-op programs post closer to their start dates, so openings appear year-round. Check listings regularly and submit materials as soon as a role opens.
Are legal intern internships paid?
Most professional legal intern internships in the United States are paid. Compensation varies by employer size, industry, and location, and listings show pay where the employer discloses it. Nonprofit and government placements sometimes offer stipends rather than hourly wages, so read each posting carefully before you apply.
What should a legal intern internship resume include?
Lead with projects, not work history. Include two or three completed assignments with the tools and sources used, and link to anything reviewable, such as a writing sample, drafted memo, or case analysis. Add relevant coursework in law, policy, or research methods, list any legal software or citation tools you know, and keep everything to one page.
Are there remote legal intern internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 17% of the legal intern internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Remote cohorts fill fast, so apply early and filter by work type to see them before they close.
What is a 1L or 2L summer associate internship?
Summer associate programs are structured legal internships at law firms specifically designed for first-year (1L) and second-year (2L) law students. They run over the summer, pair interns with attorneys across practice groups, and are among the most competitive legal intern pipelines available. Recruiting opens early in the academic year, so identify programs that fit your goals and apply in the first wave.
Can international students get legal intern internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
