Medical Assistant Jobs in New Jersey: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a medical assistant in New Jersey?
New Jersey does not issue a state license for medical assistants, so employment hinges on nationally recognized credentials. Most employers expect completion of an accredited medical assisting program through a community college or vocational school, followed by the Certified Medical Assistant exam from the American Association of Medical Assistants or the Registered Medical Assistant exam from American Medical Technologists. Earning one of those credentials before applying gives candidates a clear advantage in New Jersey's competitive outpatient hiring market.
How much do medical assistants make in New Jersey?
Medical assistants in New Jersey earn a median of about $47,210 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $37,010 for the lowest 10% to over $58,070 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire medical assistants in New Jersey?
Employers hiring medical assistants in New Jersey right now include Virtua Health, Summit Health, and Atlantic Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. New Jersey's dense network of hospital-affiliated primary care and specialty practices means openings appear consistently across both large health systems and independent group practices throughout the state.
Which New Jersey cities have the most medical assistant jobs?
The cities with the most medical assistant openings in New Jersey are Montclair, Princeton, and Toms River. This distribution reflects the concentration of hospital campuses, outpatient specialty centers, and large physician group practices in and around Newark and the greater metro corridor, while suburban and mid-state markets like Trenton and Morristown generate steady volume through regional medical centers and multi-site primary care networks.
Are there remote medical assistant jobs in New Jersey?
Yes, but they're rare. Medical assisting is a hands-on clinical role, so most positions require an on-site presence for patient intake, phlebotomy, and exam room support. About 3% of medical assistant openings tied to New Jersey are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those tend to be administrative-leaning roles focused on prior authorizations, referral coordination, or telehealth support rather than direct patient care.
How can I get hired as a medical assistant in New Jersey with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing an accredited medical assisting program at a New Jersey community college, many of which include externship placements at affiliated clinics that sometimes convert to job offers. Large systems like RWJBarnabas Health and Hackensack Meridian Health post entry-level medical assistant roles that accept candidates with externship hours in lieu of paid experience. Candidates moving from roles like patient care technician, medical receptionist, or pharmacy technician often find those positions count as qualifying clinical exposure, especially when paired with a CMA or RMA credential.
Where can I find and apply to medical assistant jobs in New Jersey?
You can find and apply to medical assistant jobs in New Jersey on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring across the state. Search the listings, find roles that fit your experience and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that match.
