UPMC St. Margaret School of Nursing is seeking a dedicated and passionate Casual Nursing Instructor to help educate and mentor the next generation of nurses. This unique opportunity allows experienced registered nurses to support student learning in clinical and laboratory settings while contributing to a nursing program with a 100% NCLEX pass rate for the past two years. St. Margaret School of Nursing currently operates a Full-Time program, however we are now in the process of starting a part-time evening program to provide further opportunities to those who cannot commit to Full-Time programs.

In this role, you will provide hands-on instruction, guidance, and evaluation of nursing students during clinical experiences and assist with skills labs as needed. Our program offers a comprehensive 4 to 6-week orientation with a dedicated preceptor to ensure success in the role. This casual position requires availability for two consecutive 8-hour shifts per week (Monday & Tuesday or Thursday & Friday), with daytime shifts from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. beginning in Summer 2027. No weekends, holidays, or on-call responsibilities are required.

Candidates with previous pediatric, obstetric, or clinical teaching experience are preferred, however not required. Purpose:
A nursing professional who has the authority, responsibility and accountability for both the didactic and clinical instruction of students in utilizing the nursing process to provide quality patient care. This position requires the ability to effectively instruct nursing students in the classroom as well as lead the faculty within the course to provide meaningful learning experiences, guide and evaluate the students in the clinical environment while utilizing the nursing process during the provision of care to ensure safe nursing care and quality patient outcomes.

Provides resources and coaching to diverse learners to assist them in meeting their individual needs. Establishes and maintains positive, caring relationships with students, faculty, management, patients/families and all other members of the health care team. Utilizes critical thinking skills to lead students in the application of the nursing process in the classroom and in the clinical area. Demonstrates clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem solving abilities required as related to various aspects of the teaching-learning process. Instructs and evaluates multiple students and creates meaningful learning assignments both in the classroom and in the clinical area. Demonstrates mastery of course content and clinical competence. Contributes in the development of school policies.
Utilizes teaching strategies grounded in educational theory and evidence based teaching practice. Provides quality classroom and clinical instruction to groups of nursing students. Uses personal attributes in facilitating student learning. Recognizes the influence of teaching styles and interpersonal interactions on learner outcomes. Creates opportunities for learner to develop critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills.
Utilizes current literature to design evidence based teaching strategies in classroom and clinical settings. Participates in quality improvement projects and/or scholarly work. Shares learning from outcomes with other faculty and schools of nursing. Participates in the Systematic Program Evaluation Process. Utilizes assessment and evaluation data to improve student performance.
Promotes creative and innovative teaching learning strategies in the classroom and during the clinical experience. Participates in strategy development for educational changes at UPMC Schools of Nursing. Utilizes leadership skills to shape and implement change across all the schools of nursing. Demonstrates a commitment to nursing, the school and the program goals. Serves as a professional role model for students in the classroom and in the clinical area. Demonstrates leadership abilities in working with multiple faculty and students in the educational environment. Serves as co-chair of school committees as assigned.

Precepting experience required
Clinical teaching experience in prelicensure program preferred
Previous teaching experience preferred
Certified Nurse Educator certification preferred
Appointment to this position and retention of this position is contingent upon the approval of the PA State Board of Nursing.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse. UPMC approved certification, preferred.CPR Certification for BLS for Health Care Providers.Have Act 33, 34 and 73 (FBI) clearances.Appointment to this position and retention of this position is contingent upon the approval of the PA State Board of Nursing.CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

• Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
