- Excellent negotiating, drafting, and practice-management skills.
- Maintain a professional demeanor, in writing and in person, with support staff, business colleagues, senior management, and outside counsel.
- An ability to adopt technology solutions and seek efficiencies in managing work.
- High ethical standards.
- An ability to “manage up” and play well with others.
- A sense of humor is a plus.
The ideal candidate has at least 3 years of relevant legal experience, including meaningful experience with digital media, advertising technology, data-driven marketing or media agency agreements.

Professional Licensing: Good standing in at least one state bar and, if not licensed to practice in California, an ability and willingness to register to practice in California pursuant to California’s in-house counsel registration requirements.
Education: An undergraduate degree, and strong academic performance at a J.D. from a highly-rated law school.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship as an Advertising Manager
Target employers with H-1B sponsorship history
Agencies and brand marketing teams at large companies sponsor H-1B visas far more often than small shops. Prioritize employers with a demonstrated history of filing for international employees in marketing and advertising roles.
Frame your OPT timeline upfront
Bring up your work authorization status early in the process. Employers who sponsor visas prefer candidates who are direct about timelines, so they can plan the H-1B filing around your OPT expiration date without surprises.
Emphasize platform and analytics expertise
Advertising Managers who own performance data, media mix analysis, or campaign attribution stand out to sponsoring employers. Quantifiable skills reduce hiring risk and strengthen the specialty occupation argument for your H-1B petition.
Document your degree-to-role connection clearly
H-1B approval for advertising roles depends on proving the position requires a specific degree. Be ready to show how your marketing or communications degree directly supports the technical requirements of the Advertising Manager position.
Use your STEM extension if your degree qualifies
Some advertising and marketing programs at STEM-designated schools qualify for the 24-month OPT extension. Confirm your CIP code with your DSO early, as this extra time significantly improves your chances of clearing the H-1B lottery.
Network within agency and in-house marketing teams
Advertising Manager roles are often filled through internal referrals. Building relationships with hiring managers at companies known to sponsor visas increases your chances of reaching decision-makers before a role is posted publicly.
Advertising Manager OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as an Advertising Manager on OPT?
Yes, as long as your job is directly related to your degree field. Advertising Manager roles typically qualify for F-1 OPT students with degrees in marketing, communications, advertising, or business. Your DSO must report your employer and start date in SEVIS within the required window after you begin working.
Does an Advertising Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B?
Generally yes. USCIS evaluates whether the position normally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field. Advertising Manager roles that involve strategic planning, media buying analysis, or brand management typically meet this threshold, particularly when the employer can document degree requirements in the job description and hiring practices.
How do I find Advertising Manager jobs that sponsor OPT and H-1B visas?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for employers open to sponsoring international students, so you can focus your search on companies that have sponsored marketing and advertising roles before. Searching broadly and then filtering for sponsorship willingness wastes time during a limited OPT window, so a targeted approach matters.
What happens if my OPT expires before my H-1B is approved?
If your employer files your H-1B petition before your OPT expires and you have a timely filed receipt notice, you may be eligible for a cap-gap extension that bridges your status until October 1. Your DSO can update your SEVIS record to reflect the extension, allowing you to continue working without interruption.
Do advertising roles at agencies sponsor H-1B visas as often as in-house marketing teams?
It varies. Large holding company agencies such as WPP, Publicis, and IPG have established immigration support processes and sponsor regularly. Smaller independent agencies often lack the infrastructure or budget to sponsor. In-house marketing teams at large consumer brands and tech companies tend to offer more consistent sponsorship, particularly for manager-level roles.
