How to Get Visa Sponsorship as an Assistant Project Manager
Target firms with established H-1B track records
Large general contractors, engineering consultancies, and real estate development firms file H-1B petitions regularly. Prioritize employers with a documented history of sponsoring project management roles, as they understand the process and are less likely to back out.
Clarify your STEM OPT eligibility early
If your degree is in civil engineering, construction management, or a STEM-designated field, you may qualify for a 24-month OPT extension. Confirm your program's CIP code with your DSO before applying, since this significantly extends your work authorization runway.
Quantify your project contributions from day one
H-1B petitions for Assistant Project Managers must demonstrate a specialty occupation. Track scope, budget figures, and team coordination outcomes you contributed to. Concrete project metrics strengthen your employer's case when filing your petition.
Get your job description in writing before your offer letter
USCIS scrutinizes whether an Assistant Project Manager role truly requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field. A detailed, duties-focused job description that references your degree discipline strengthens specialty occupation arguments significantly.
Use your OPT period to rotate across project phases
Exposure to preconstruction, execution, and closeout phases makes you a stronger H-1B candidate and a more promotable employee. Breadth of experience signals to USCIS and employers alike that the role demands specialized, degree-level expertise.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does an Assistant Project Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Most Assistant Project Manager positions do qualify, but the job description matters enormously. USCIS requires that the role normally demand a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field, such as construction management, civil engineering, or business. Generalist roles where any degree is accepted are more vulnerable to challenges. A well-drafted job description tied to your specific degree field is the strongest protection.
Can I work as an Assistant Project Manager on OPT without my employer sponsoring me immediately?
Yes. OPT authorization is tied to your F-1 status, not your employer. You can begin working as an Assistant Project Manager as soon as your OPT start date arrives and your EAD card is in hand. Sponsorship becomes relevant later, typically when your OPT period is approaching its end and you need a different work authorization category to stay.
Where can I find Assistant Project Manager jobs that are open to OPT candidates?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and filters for employers willing to hire candidates on OPT and sponsor visas. Searching there saves significant time compared to sifting through postings that screen out international candidates. Most employers listed have sponsored roles in construction, engineering, and project management before.
Does my degree field affect whether I qualify for the STEM OPT extension as an Assistant Project Manager?
Yes, entirely. The STEM extension is based on your degree's CIP code, not your job title. Degrees in civil engineering, construction engineering, mechanical engineering, or computer science typically qualify. A business administration or communications degree usually does not. Confirm your CIP code with your Designated School Official before accepting a role, since the extension adds 24 months to your work authorization.
What happens to my OPT if my employer's H-1B petition is selected in the lottery but doesn't start until October 1?
If your employer files a timely H-1B petition before your OPT expires, cap-gap protection automatically extends your F-1 status and work authorization through September 30. If selected, your H-1B begins October 1 with no gap in employment. If not selected, your authorization ends and you'll need to explore alternatives such as a different visa category or leaving the country.
