Liberty Mutual Insurance offers an engaging opportunity for an Associate Attorney to represent the company and its policyholders in routine civil litigation and workers' compensation matters involving moderately complex legal issues and claims for monetary damages or compensation related to personal injury or property damage. Under moderate supervision, you will manage cases from inception through resolution, applying your legal knowledge, research skills, and client relationship capabilities in a collaborative and supportive environment.
Responsibilities:
- Litigation Execution: Manage all phases of litigation, including discovery, hearings, trials, mediations, and drafting legal documents such as pleadings and motions. Support Senior Trial Counsel and Senior Litigation Counsel in all aspects of case handling through trial, including preparation, management, and assistance at every stage of the litigation process.
- Client Advisory and Relationship Management: Provide clear and reasoned legal opinions and strategic advice to Claims Representatives and insured clients. Develop and maintain strong client relationships through transparent and effective communication.
- Technology Utilization: Utilize e-discovery and case management technologies to streamline legal processes, improve efficiency, and reduce operational costs. Demonstrate effective coordination with remote team members and proficiency in remote work settings.
- Risk Evaluation and Case Resolution Facilitation: Identify, evaluate, and collaborate on strategies to mitigate legal risks, working closely with clients and senior counsel to facilitate effective resolutions.
- Documentation Accuracy and Compliance: Ensure all legal documents, pleadings, and motions are meticulously prepared, accurate, and compliant with applicable standards and client expectations.
- Timely Client Communication: Provide clear, consistent, and timely updates and recommendations to insured clients and claims professionals to maintain alignment with case objectives.
- Contribution to Organizational Improvement: Participate in initiatives aimed at enhancing efficiency, effectiveness, and best practices within Staff Legal and Global Legal & Compliance organizations.
- Ethical Compliance Adherence: Uphold the highest standards of legal ethics and compliance, following legal regulations and licensing requirements and promoting a culture of integrity within the legal team.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) or LLB degree from an accredited law school.
- Admission to the bar in INSERT STATE REQUIRED and in good standing; special licenses to practice before particular boards or federal courts may be required.
- General knowledge of insurance law, and as necessary, workers’ compensation and/or No Fault law.
- Proficient in e-discovery, case management systems, and basic legal analysis tools.
- Strong analytical, research, and legal writing skills.
- Basic knowledge of negotiation techniques including preparation, active listening, and problem-solving.
- Demonstrated ability to manage cases from start to finish under supervision.
- Effective communication and persuasion skills, both written and oral.
- Ability to collaborate with clients, claims professionals, and senior attorneys.
- Organized, process-oriented with strong time management skills.

Can I work as an Associate Attorney on F-1 OPT?
Yes, as long as your OPT is authorized in a field directly related to your J.D. Law is a qualifying field of study, so associate attorney roles at law firms or in-house legal departments fall within standard OPT scope. Your EAD must be valid before your start date, and your employment must remain in a legal capacity tied to your degree.
Do law firms typically sponsor H-1B visas for associate attorneys on OPT?
Many large law firms sponsor H-1B visas for associates they want to retain, but it's far from universal at smaller firms. Am Law 200 firms and firms with significant international practices sponsor the most consistently. If sponsorship is a condition of accepting an offer, raise it before signing. Some firms also sponsor O-1A or EB-1 visas for associates with strong publication or recognition records.
Does STEM OPT apply to Associate Attorney roles?
No. J.D. programs are not classified under a STEM-designated CIP code, so law graduates are not eligible for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Standard OPT provides 12 months of work authorization.
