How to Get Visa Sponsorship as an Epic Applications Analyst
Lead with your STEM OPT eligibility
Employers weighing sponsorship costs care about runway. Mentioning upfront that your STEM degree qualifies you for a three-year OPT period removes a major objection before the interview even starts. Include it in your resume summary.
Highlight any Epic module exposure early
Even coursework, internship exposure, or self-study with Epic Playground counts. Hiring managers for these roles prioritize module familiarity over visa status, so leading with relevant system knowledge shifts the conversation toward your qualifications.
Get certified in at least one Epic module
Epic certification requires employer sponsorship, but some universities have training agreements. If yours does, pursue certification before graduating. Certified candidates command stronger offers and give employers immediate return on any visa investment they make.
Frame your OPT timeline around project cycles
Epic implementations typically run 12 to 24 months. Showing an employer that your OPT authorization covers the full project timeline, with STEM extension buffer, directly addresses the continuity concern most hiring managers have about international candidates.
Use Migrate Mate to find OPT-friendly postings
Not every job posting makes OPT sponsorship willingness clear. Migrate Mate filters for employers who have actively sponsored international candidates, saving you from applying to roles where visa support is unlikely from the start.

Do Epic Applications Analyst roles qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, in most cases. Epic Applications Analyst positions typically fall under CIP codes for information systems, health informatics, or computer science, all of which are on the STEM Designated Degree Program List. If your underlying F-1 degree is in one of those fields, you're eligible to apply for the 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving you up to three years of total OPT work authorization.
How do I find Epic Applications Analyst jobs that sponsor OPT?
The most efficient approach is to search on Migrate Mate, which is built specifically for F-1 OPT and STEM OPT candidates and surfaces employers with a track record of sponsoring international workers. Large health systems and academic medical centers are your best targets. Organizations mid-implementation or preparing for a go-live often have the most urgent hiring needs and are less likely to pass on a qualified candidate over visa status.
Will employers sponsor H-1B after my OPT ends if I'm working as an Epic analyst?
Many do, particularly large hospital networks and health IT consulting firms that rely on Epic talent. Epic-certified analysts are in short supply, which gives candidates meaningful leverage when negotiating sponsorship commitments. It's worth asking directly during the offer stage whether the organization has sponsored H-1B petitions for analysts previously. A history of sponsorship is the strongest signal you have before accepting a role.
Can I work as an Epic Applications Analyst through a staffing agency on OPT?
Technically yes, but it's complicated. F-1 OPT regulations require that your work be directly related to your degree field, that you're paid, and that there's a bona fide employer-employee relationship. Some staffing arrangements may not satisfy USCIS standards for employment verification, particularly for STEM OPT, which requires your employer to complete a formal training plan. Direct-hire roles at health systems are significantly lower-risk for your immigration status.
What degree fields make F-1 students eligible for Epic Applications Analyst positions?
Health informatics, health information management, computer science, information systems, biomedical informatics, and nursing informatics are the most common qualifying fields. Some employers also consider candidates from clinical backgrounds, such as nursing or pharmacy, with strong technical skills. For STEM OPT extension purposes, the degree needs to appear on the official STEM Designated Degree Program List, which health informatics and computer science programs typically satisfy.
