How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Hris Specialist
Target HRIS-heavy employers
Large enterprises running Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, or Oracle HCM have dedicated HRIS teams and established sponsorship pipelines. These organizations file H-1B petitions regularly and understand the process, making them far more receptive to OPT candidates than smaller firms.
Lead with your system expertise
Employers sponsor HRIS Specialists for technical depth, not general HR knowledge. Highlight specific platforms you've configured, modules you've managed, or implementations you've supported. System-specific expertise is what turns an OPT candidate into a hard-to-replace hire worth sponsoring.
Frame your degree as a specialty occupation match
HRIS Specialist roles typically qualify as specialty occupations for H-1B purposes. Degrees in information systems, HR management, or business analytics directly support this classification. Make your degree-to-role connection explicit on your resume and in interviews to strengthen the sponsorship case.
Pursue STEM OPT extension if eligible
If your degree is in information systems, computer science, or a related STEM field, apply for the 24-month STEM OPT extension early. The extended timeline significantly reduces employer urgency and makes sponsorship conversations less pressured for both sides.
Demonstrate implementation and integration experience
HRIS roles that involve system integrations, data migrations, or cross-functional implementations are harder to fill and easier to sponsor. Employers justify sponsorship costs when a candidate has specialized technical experience that isn't readily available in the domestic applicant pool.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do HRIS Specialist roles qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, HRIS Specialist roles typically qualify as specialty occupations under H-1B rules. The position generally requires at least a bachelor's degree in information systems, HR management, business analytics, or a related field. Employers filing LCAs for HRIS roles with the Department of Labor routinely list these degree requirements, which supports the specialty occupation classification USCIS expects.
Can I work as an HRIS Specialist on OPT before finding a sponsor?
Yes. F-1 students authorized for post-completion OPT can work full-time in a role directly related to their degree. An HRIS Specialist position typically qualifies if your degree is in information systems, HR, or business. Your employer does not need to sponsor you during OPT. Sponsorship only becomes necessary when your OPT period ends and you need a different work authorization status.
Which employers sponsor HRIS Specialists for H-1B visas?
Large employers with complex HR technology stacks are your best targets. Companies running enterprise-level Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, or Oracle HCM deployments maintain HRIS teams and have experience sponsoring technical staff. Consulting firms that implement these platforms also sponsor frequently. You can browse OPT-friendly HRIS Specialist openings on Migrate Mate, which filters for employers open to visa sponsorship.
Does my degree field affect my eligibility for HRIS Specialist OPT jobs?
It does. OPT requires that your job be directly related to your degree field. A degree in information systems, human resources management, business administration, or data analytics will generally satisfy this requirement for HRIS roles. If your degree is in an unrelated field, you may need to document how your coursework connects to the position, which can complicate both OPT authorization and future H-1B filings.
Am I eligible for a STEM OPT extension as an HRIS Specialist?
Potentially, yes. If your degree is classified under a STEM-designated field, such as management information systems or computer and information science, and your HRIS role involves applying those technical skills, you may qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. The extension requires your employer to enroll in E-Verify. Confirm your degree's CIP code with your designated school official before applying to your program for the extension.
