OPT Interventional Radiologist Jobs
Interventional Radiology is a physician specialty that requires GME training, board certification, and active medical licensure, all of which intersect with OPT timing in ways that catch many F-1 graduates off guard. Most IR positions are hospital-based and employer-sponsored, making early outreach to academic medical centers critical during your OPT window.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship in Interventional Radiologist
Start your job search before residency or fellowship ends
IR hiring cycles at academic medical centers often run 12 to 18 months before a start date. Beginning your search during your final fellowship year gives you the runway to secure sponsorship before your OPT authorization begins.
Clarify your OPT end date and STEM extension eligibility upfront
Interventional Radiology is not a STEM-designated field, so standard 12-month OPT applies unless your underlying degree qualifies. Confirm your exact authorization window early so employers can plan H-1B visa or J-1 visa waiver timelines accordingly.
Target academic medical centers and large health systems first
Teaching hospitals and large health networks have dedicated immigration legal teams and routinely sponsor H-1B physicians. Community hospitals and private practices are less likely to have sponsorship infrastructure and may decline without a clear process.
Understand the J-1 waiver pathway if it applies to you
If you completed residency or fellowship on a J-1 visa, you may need a Conrad 30 or federal agency waiver before an employer can sponsor you for H-1B. Identifying waiver slots early is critical since they are limited and competitive.
Get board certification on track before your OPT expires
Many hospitals will not finalize an employment contract until you hold ABR certification or are board-eligible. Delays in certification can jeopardize your visa sponsorship timeline, so align your exam schedule with your expected start date.
Be explicit about your authorization timeline with hiring departments
IR departments often involve multiple decision-makers including department chairs and credentialing offices. Stating your OPT dates, work authorization status, and H-1B sponsorship needs in writing early prevents misunderstandings late in the process.
Interventional Radiologist OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as an Interventional Radiologist on OPT?
Yes, but only if your OPT employment is directly related to your degree field. For physicians completing U.S. residency or fellowship on F-1 status, OPT authorizes you to work in your specialty. Your employer must be listed on your EAD, and you cannot begin work before your OPT start date. Most IR positions at academic centers will accommodate this, provided you coordinate the start date with USCIS processing timelines.
Does Interventional Radiology qualify for a STEM OPT extension?
Interventional Radiology as a clinical specialty does not carry a STEM OPT designation under the Department of Homeland Security's STEM list. Standard OPT provides 12 months of work authorization. If your underlying M.D. or D.O. program was classified under a STEM CIP code by your DSO, consult your international student office to verify eligibility before assuming you qualify for the 24-month extension.
How do I find Interventional Radiologist jobs that sponsor OPT or H-1B?
Migrate Mate is specifically built to surface jobs at employers who sponsor international physicians and OPT workers. Searching on Migrate Mate filters out roles where sponsorship is unlikely, saving you from spending weeks applying to positions that will not accommodate your status. Academic medical centers and large health systems are the most consistent sponsors in IR, and you can identify them directly on the platform.
What visa typically follows OPT for Interventional Radiologists?
The H-1B is the most common next step for physician specialists. Interventional Radiology qualifies as a specialty occupation, and most academic employers are experienced with the H-1B petition process. If you completed training on a J-1 exchange visitor visa, you may be subject to a two-year home residency requirement and will need a waiver before an H-1B can be approved. Confirm your visa history with an immigration attorney early.
What should I know about credentialing timelines and OPT?
Hospital credentialing for physicians typically takes 60 to 120 days after an offer is signed. If your OPT start date and credentialing completion date do not align, you may face a gap where you are authorized to work but not yet cleared to practice. Coordinate with your employer's medical staff office and HR team well in advance so the credentialing process runs parallel to, not after, your OPT approval.
