Target companies with existing OPT hiring history
Employers who have hired OPT students before understand the process and are far less likely to drop your application over work authorization concerns. Prioritize companies with documented OPT experience when filtering SDR job listings.
Lead with your OPT status early and confidently
Don't wait until the offer stage to mention your work authorization. Stating upfront that you have OPT and are authorized to work immediately builds trust and filters out time-wasting conversations with employers who won't sponsor.
Confirm your employer is E-Verify enrolled before accepting an offer
E-Verify enrollment is required for STEM OPT extensions. If you plan to extend beyond 12 months, verify the employer's E-Verify status before signing anything. A job that can't support your extension could cut your U.S. work period short.
Frame your international background as a sales asset
SDR roles often involve outreach across diverse markets and customer profiles. Multilingual ability, cross-cultural communication, and international business exposure are genuinely valuable in sales and worth highlighting explicitly in your resume and interviews.
Apply during your final semester before graduation
OPT applications take up to 90 days to process, and you can apply up to 90 days before your program end date. Starting your SDR job search early ensures you have your EAD card ready before your intended start date.
Ask directly about H-1B sponsorship timelines during interviews
SDR roles often lead to account executive promotions within one to two years. Ask whether the company has sponsored H-1B visas for salespeople before. Knowing this upfront helps you plan your immigration pathway beyond OPT.
Sales Development Representative OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a Sales Development Representative on OPT?
Yes. SDR roles qualify for OPT as long as the position relates to your degree field. Most business, communications, marketing, and economics degrees connect clearly to an SDR role. If your degree is in a STEM field, some SDR positions at tech companies may qualify for STEM OPT, but the connection to your major needs to be defensible to your DSO.
Does my SDR employer need to sponsor me for OPT?
No. OPT is work authorization tied to your F-1 status, not employer sponsorship. Your employer does not file any petition on your behalf for standard OPT. However, for a STEM OPT extension, your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify and sign a training plan form with your DSO. Confirming E-Verify status early avoids complications later.
Where can I find SDR jobs that are open to OPT students?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and filters jobs by visa sponsorship and OPT eligibility, so you're not wasting time on listings that exclude international candidates. SDR roles in tech, SaaS, and B2B sales appear regularly on the platform, particularly at companies with a track record of hiring and sponsoring international employees.
Do SDR jobs typically lead to H-1B sponsorship?
Some do, but it depends on the employer. Larger tech and SaaS companies with established HR infrastructure are more likely to sponsor H-1B visas for salespeople, especially after a promotion to account executive. Smaller startups may not have experience with the process. Ask directly during the interview whether the company has sponsored salespeople for H-1B in the past.
What happens to my OPT if I lose my SDR job?
You have a 60-day grace period after your OPT employment ends to find a new qualifying position, change your visa status, or depart the United States. During this period you cannot work. If you find a new SDR role within 60 days and it relates to your degree, your OPT authorization continues. Unemployment also accumulates against your OPT period, with a 90-day limit for standard OPT.
