How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Security Consultant
Confirm your degree qualifies for STEM OPT
Security Consultant roles typically require a degree in computer science, information systems, or cybersecurity. If your degree is on the STEM OPT designated list, you're eligible for a 24-month extension, giving employers significantly more time to sponsor your H-1B.
Target consulting firms with established OPT pipelines
Large consulting firms like Deloitte, Accenture, and Booz Allen Hamilton regularly hire international graduates and have structured OPT and H-1B sponsorship processes. Smaller boutique firms often lack the legal infrastructure to sponsor visas at all.
Obtain relevant certifications before applying
Security+ , CISSP, or CEH certifications signal credibility in a field where credentials carry real weight. These also reinforce that your role qualifies as a specialty occupation, which matters if your employer later files an H-1B on your behalf.
Address federal contractor clearance requirements early
Many Security Consultant roles at government contractors require a security clearance. F-1 OPT students are generally not eligible for clearances, so prioritize private-sector or commercial clients where clearance isn't a hard requirement during your OPT period.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do Security Consultant jobs qualify as specialty occupations for OPT and H-1B purposes?
Yes, Security Consultant roles typically qualify as specialty occupations because they require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field, usually computer science, information systems, cybersecurity, or a related discipline. The key is that the job description must require a degree, not just prefer one. Roles focused on risk assessment, penetration testing, or compliance architecture consistently meet this standard.
Can I work as a Security Consultant on OPT if my degree is in a non-STEM field?
Yes, standard 12-month OPT applies regardless of your major as long as your security consultant role is directly related to your field of study. However, without a STEM-designated degree, you won't qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension, which limits your window to find H-1B sponsorship to a single lottery cycle.
How do I find Security Consultant employers who sponsor OPT and H-1B visas?
Migrate Mate filters Security Consultant jobs specifically for OPT and visa sponsorship eligibility, so you're not wasting time on roles that won't work for your situation. Historically, major employers of sponsored security consultants include firms like Deloitte, PwC, KPMG, and Booz Allen Hamilton, all of which have active H-1B sponsorship histories visible in DOL disclosure data.
Are there OPT restrictions that affect Security Consultant roles at government contractors?
Yes, this is a real constraint. Many federal and defense contractor Security Consultant positions require a U.S. government security clearance, which F-1 OPT students are generally ineligible to hold. Focus your search on commercial cybersecurity firms, financial institutions, healthcare organizations, and technology companies, where clearance is not a prerequisite for the role.
What happens to my Security Consultant job if I don't get selected in the H-1B lottery?
If you're on STEM OPT, a missed lottery doesn't end your authorization immediately. You have up to three H-1B registration cycles across your STEM extension period, giving you until your authorization expires to be selected. Some employers will also explore cap-exempt H-1B routes or alternative visas like the O-1A if you have demonstrable expertise in your field.
