- Translate needs into buildable work by writing well-formed epics/user stories, defining acceptance criteria and non-functional requirements (performance, scalability, resilience, usability, accessibility, security, continuity), and clarifying tradeoffs, dependencies, and constraints.
- Drive delivery and outcomes through iterative Agile practices, partnering with design and engineering on sizing and planning, removing blockers, facilitating user review/acceptance, and measuring feature success post-launch to improve product health.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- 4+ years of experience using analytics/optimization tools to inform product planning and prioritization
- 4+ years partnering with design and engineering to deliver customer-facing features
- 4+ years building roadmaps and backlogs, writing user stories, and coordinating conflicting requirements in a fast-paced environment
- 4+ years of industry experience in a technology environment delivering complex products
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 7+ years delivering complex products in a technology environment, including cross-team roadmaps and technically complex features
- Recent experience building for web and/or mobile, and ability to read/understand code (prior programming experience a plus)
- 5+ years of hands-on product planning: technical roadmaps, story outlines, acceptance criteria, and backlog refinement at scale
- Strong ability to influence without authority, communicate clearly, and stay organized while managing competing priorities; deep familiarity with Agile practices and tools

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship as a Technical Product Owner
Target companies with active H-1B filing history
Employers who have sponsored H-1B visas in the past are far more likely to sponsor OPT students. Use DOL disclosure data to verify a company's sponsorship track record before investing time in their application process.
Lead with your technical background, not just product instincts
Technical Product Owners who can read code, write SQL, or speak fluently with engineering teams stand out. Emphasize hands-on technical skills in your resume to justify the STEM OPT classification and signal long-term value.
Confirm your role qualifies for STEM OPT before accepting
Not every TPO role is classified as STEM-eligible. Verify that the employer is E-Verify enrolled and that the job's SOC code falls under a STEM-designated field before signing an offer. Your DSO must approve the extension.
Frame your OPT timeline clearly in early conversations
Disclose your OPT status and remaining authorization window early. Employers appreciate transparency, and it gives hiring managers time to assess H-1B sponsorship feasibility before extending an offer rather than after.
Build a portfolio of shipped product work
Technical Product Owners with documented outcomes, such as reduced sprint cycle times or shipped features with measurable impact, are far easier to justify sponsoring. Concrete results reduce employer hesitation around visa sponsorship costs.
Prioritize mid-size tech companies over early-stage startups
Seed and Series A startups rarely have the legal infrastructure for H-1B sponsorship. Mid-size companies with established HR teams and immigration counsel are better bets for OPT students who need a clear path to long-term work authorization.
Technical Product Owner OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Technical Product Owner role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on how the role is classified. If the position is tied to a STEM-designated SOC code, such as Software Developers or Computer and Information Systems Managers, and the employer is E-Verify enrolled, the role typically qualifies. Roles classified under general management codes may not. Confirm the SOC code with your employer and DSO before assuming you're eligible for the 24-month STEM extension.
How do I find Technical Product Owner jobs that explicitly sponsor OPT students?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT and visa-sponsored job searches, so it filters for employers willing to sponsor work authorization. General job boards don't surface this information reliably, and you risk wasting applications on companies that won't sponsor. Browsing Technical Product Owner listings on Migrate Mate lets you focus your search on employers who have already indicated sponsorship openness.
Will companies sponsor H-1B visas for Technical Product Owners after OPT?
Many do, especially at mid-size and large tech companies where the TPO role is considered a core engineering-adjacent function. Companies that view product ownership as a technical discipline rather than a business role are more likely to support H-1B sponsorship. Your strongest leverage is demonstrating deep technical fluency and a track record of shipping product, which makes the sponsorship cost easier to justify internally.
What degree background supports an OPT authorization for Technical Product Owner roles?
OPT authorization must be tied to your field of study. For a Technical Product Owner role, degrees in computer science, software engineering, information systems, or management information systems provide the clearest alignment. Some employers also accept degrees in electrical engineering or data science if the role involves systems-level product work. If your degree is in business or a non-STEM field, you may still qualify for standard 12-month OPT but not the STEM extension.
Can I switch employers during OPT as a Technical Product Owner?
Yes, you can change employers while on OPT, but your new role must still be directly related to your degree field and must be at least 20 hours per week. You're required to report the employer change to your DSO within 10 days. If you're on a STEM OPT extension, the new employer must also be E-Verify enrolled and you'll need to submit a new Form I-983 training plan signed by the new employer.
