Primary Care Physician Jobs in Louisiana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a primary care physician in Louisiana?
To practice as a primary care physician in Louisiana, you must obtain a medical license from the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners, which requires a medical degree from an accredited school, completion of an ACGME-accredited residency in family medicine, internal medicine, or a related primary care field, and passage of the USMLE or COMLEX series. You must also maintain a current DEA registration and a Louisiana Controlled Dangerous Substances certificate to prescribe medications in the state.
Which companies hire primary care physicians in Louisiana?
Companies currently hiring primary care physicians in Louisiana include Ochsner Health, CenterWell, and Purple Cow Recruiting, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Louisiana's mix of large integrated health systems, federally qualified health centers, and rural health networks means openings appear across both major metros and underserved rural parishes throughout the state.
Which Louisiana cities have the most primary care physician jobs?
New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Marrero have the most primary care physician openings in Louisiana. New Orleans and Baton Rouge drive volume through large academic medical centers and integrated health systems like Ochsner and LCMC Health, while Shreveport draws openings from Willis-Knighton and Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, which anchors a significant cluster of employed-physician practices in the northwest part of the state.
Are there remote primary care physician jobs in Louisiana?
Yes, but they're rare. Primary care is a hands-on clinical specialty and most roles require an in-person patient panel. About 0% of primary care physician openings tied to Louisiana are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those positions are almost exclusively in telehealth-specific practices or care management roles that do not involve direct procedural or physical examination duties.
How can I get hired as a primary care physician in Louisiana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to residency-to-employment pipeline programs at Louisiana's major health systems. Ochsner Health and LCMC Health both recruit graduating residents into employed family medicine and internal medicine positions, and Louisiana's network of federally qualified health centers, including those managed through the Louisiana Primary Care Association, regularly hires physicians new to independent practice. Candidates who hold a Louisiana medical license, complete their board certification process, and have clinical rotations in underserved or rural settings gain a clear edge given the state's significant HPSA-designated shortage areas.
Where can I find and apply to primary care physician jobs in Louisiana?
You can find and apply to primary care physician jobs in Louisiana on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the roles that match your specialty and experience level and apply directly to the ones that fit your background and preferred practice setting.
