Project Accountant Jobs in Michigan: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a project accountant in Michigan?
A bachelor's degree in accounting or finance is the standard entry point for project accountant roles in Michigan. While the role itself does not require a state-issued license, many Michigan employers in construction and engineering prefer or require candidates pursuing CPA licensure through the Michigan Board of Accountancy. Gaining experience in cost reporting, job costing software, or contract billing through an accounting or finance role at a Michigan construction firm, utility, or manufacturer is the most direct path.
Which companies hire project accountants in Michigan?
Employers hiring project accountants in Michigan right now include M. J. ELECTRIC, The Mannik & Smith Group, and Fives, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Michigan's strong base of construction management firms, automotive manufacturers, and public utilities creates consistent demand for project accountants with cost control and contract billing experience.
Which Michigan cities have the most project accountant jobs?
Grand Rapids, Novi, and Flint have the most project accountant openings in Michigan. Detroit dominates due to its concentration of large construction contractors, automotive headquarters, and infrastructure redevelopment programs, while Grand Rapids draws demand from its manufacturing and healthcare construction sectors and Ann Arbor benefits from university-affiliated capital projects and technology firm growth.
Are there remote project accountant jobs in Michigan?
Yes, though they are less common than in purely analytical finance roles, since project accountants often coordinate directly with site teams and project managers. About 40% of project accountant openings tied to Michigan are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting a mix of flexibility depending on project phase and employer type. Tasks like invoicing, budget reporting, and ERP data entry are most likely to be performed remotely.
How can I get hired as a project accountant in Michigan with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to accounts payable, billing coordinator, or cost technician roles at Michigan construction firms, engineering companies, or manufacturers, where project accounting functions overlap with general accounting duties. Large Michigan employers like Barton Malow and Consumers Energy periodically bring on accounting associates or recent graduates for rotational or project-support roles. Completing coursework in cost accounting, earning an Excel or ERP certification, and targeting smaller regional contractors in West Michigan or metro Detroit significantly improves a candidate's chances without prior project-specific experience.
Where can I find and apply to project accountant jobs in Michigan?
You can find and apply to project accountant jobs in Michigan on Migrate Mate, which lists current Michigan openings across construction, manufacturing, engineering, and related sectors. Find the roles that fit your experience and apply directly.
