Project Accountant Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a project accountant in California?
Most California employers require a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance as the foundation. From there, candidates build experience in job costing, budget tracking, and construction or capital project billing. A CPA license issued through the California Board of Accountancy, which oversees CPA examination and licensure in the state, strengthens candidacy for senior roles. Many project accountants enter through staff accountant positions at construction firms, engineering companies, or real estate developers before moving into dedicated project accounting functions.
Which companies hire project accountants in California?
Employers hiring project accountants in California right now include Apple, ENTRUST Solutions, and Alvarez & Marsal, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's scale of public infrastructure investment, commercial construction, and defense contracting means large general contractors, engineering firms, and healthcare systems maintain ongoing project accounting teams across the state.
Which California cities have the most project accountant jobs?
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego have the most project accountant openings in California right now. Los Angeles anchors the list through its volume of commercial construction, entertainment infrastructure, and public works contracting, while San Francisco and San Diego reflect concentration in technology campus development, life sciences facilities, and defense program accounting tied to major military installations.
Are there remote project accountant jobs in California?
Yes, and more than you might expect for an accounting role tied to projects. About 28% of project accountant openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting that billing, reporting, and financial close work can be done off-site even when the underlying project is physical. The functions most commonly offered remotely are invoicing, budget variance reporting, and month-end close support.
How can I get hired as a project accountant in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a staff accountant or accounts payable role at a California construction firm, engineering company, or real estate developer, where exposure to job cost coding and project billing builds relevant experience quickly. Large California contractors and development companies regularly hire new accounting graduates into rotational or staff roles. Familiarity with construction ERP platforms such as Viewpoint or Sage 300 and completion of coursework in cost accounting or managerial accounting gives candidates a clear edge over generalist applicants.
