Finance Specialist Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a finance specialist in California?
Most California employers require a bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics, or business administration as the baseline credential. While there is no state license required to work as a finance specialist, candidates who pursue CPA licensure through the California Board of Accountancy gain a meaningful competitive edge, particularly for roles involving financial reporting or auditing. Earning a CFA designation further strengthens candidacy for investment-focused or corporate finance positions in the state.
How much do finance specialists make in California?
Finance specialists in California earn a median of about $80,810 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $49,160 for the lowest 10% to over $163,120 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire finance specialists in California?
Employers hiring finance specialists in California right now include City National Bank, Jobot, and PENNYMAC, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of technology headquarters, major banking operations, and large public university systems means demand is spread across several distinct employer types rather than a single industry.
Which California cities have the most finance specialist jobs?
The California cities with the most finance specialist openings are Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco. Los Angeles and San Francisco drive the bulk of listings through their dense clusters of corporate headquarters, regional bank offices, and asset management firms, while San Diego contributes consistent volume through its biotech and defense contractor sectors, each of which maintains dedicated in-house finance teams.
Are there remote finance specialist jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 19% of finance specialist openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the role centers on data analysis, reporting, and modeling rather than on-site operations. Financial planning and analysis roles and corporate budgeting positions are the most consistently remote-eligible, while treasury and accounts payable roles tend to require at least partial on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a finance specialist in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a junior financial analyst or finance coordinator role, which large California employers use as a pipeline for developing in-house talent. The University of California system, Kaiser Permanente, and major California-based technology firms regularly post new-graduate and rotational finance program openings that do not require prior professional experience. Candidates who have passed the CPA Exam sections or hold an active Excel or financial modeling certificate from a recognized provider stand out in competitive applicant pools for these positions.
Where can I find and apply to finance specialist jobs in California?
You can find and apply to finance specialist jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Find roles that fit your experience and location, then apply directly to each one.
