Project Director Jobs in Maine: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a project director in Maine?
Most project directors in Maine reach the role by combining a bachelor's degree in a relevant field with a PMP certification and progressive management experience. Maine does not require a state-issued license specifically for the project director title, but roles in construction often expect a Maine-recognized professional engineer license or construction supervisor credential. Healthcare and defense employers typically require deep domain experience and demonstrated leadership of large budgets before considering candidates for director-level positions.
How much do project directors make in Maine?
Project directors in Maine earn a median of about $101,830 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $63,560 for the lowest 10% to over $147,640 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire project directors in Maine?
Maine project director roles are posted by MaineHealth, Preferred Therapy Solutions, and CVS Health and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Maine's concentration of large hospital systems, shipbuilding contractors, and civil engineering firms means openings appear across a range of industries rather than clustering in a single sector.
Which Maine cities have the most project director jobs?
Portland, Augusta, and South Portland have the most project director openings in Maine. Portland drives the most volume as the state's largest commercial and healthcare hub, while Augusta draws openings through state government agencies and healthcare networks, and Bangor anchors demand in eastern Maine through regional hospital systems and construction activity tied to infrastructure investment.
Are there remote project director jobs in Maine?
Yes, but they're rare. Project directors typically oversee active sites, contractors, and in-person teams, which limits how much of the role can move fully remote. About 20% of project director openings tied to Maine are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with most flexibility appearing in the planning, reporting, and stakeholder coordination phases rather than active construction or operations oversight.
How can I get hired as a project director in Maine with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is building experience as a project manager or program coordinator first, then pursuing a PMP certification to signal readiness for director-level responsibility. Large Maine employers like MaineHealth and Cianbro run formal project management development programs and often promote from within. Starting in a project coordinator or assistant project manager role at a Maine construction firm, engineering consultancy, or hospital system gives candidates the portfolio and network that director searches require.
Where can I find and apply to project director jobs in Maine?
You can find and apply to project director jobs in Maine on Migrate Mate, which lists current Maine openings across healthcare, construction, defense, and the public sector. Find roles that match your experience and apply directly to the ones that fit.
