Project Director Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a project director in Texas?
Most project directors in Texas reach the role by combining a bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, business, or a related field with a Project Management Professional certification through the Project Management Institute. Texas does not require a state-issued license specific to the project director title, but PE licensure through the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors is common in engineering and infrastructure roles. Candidates typically advance from project manager positions before stepping into director-level responsibility.
How much do project directors make in Texas?
Project directors in Texas earn a median of about $98,440 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $57,460 for the lowest 10% to over $162,780 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire project directors in Texas?
Employers hiring project directors in Texas right now include Alvarez & Marsal, Houston Methodist, and Vizient, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's scale across energy, healthcare, and technology means project director openings appear regularly at both large corporations and regional firms throughout the state.
Which Texas cities have the most project director jobs?
Houston, Dallas, and Austin have the most project director openings in Texas. Houston's concentration of energy and engineering firms drives consistent demand, Dallas draws technology and corporate headquarters that run enterprise-scale programs, and Austin's fast-growing tech and construction sectors create steady openings for experienced project leaders.
Are there remote project director jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields, since project directors often need to be on-site to manage contractors, inspect progress, and meet with stakeholders. About 22% of project director openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with the remote share concentrated in IT program management and enterprise transformation roles rather than construction or infrastructure.
How can I get hired as a project director in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is to start as a project coordinator or project manager at a Texas-based firm in construction, energy, or healthcare IT, then build toward the director level. Large Texas employers such as Fluor, the University of Texas System, and major hospital networks run structured project management development programs and frequently promote from within. Earning a CAPM or PMP certification early signals commitment and gives candidates an edge when competing for roles that require minimal direct experience.
