Public Relations Intern Jobs in Maryland: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a public relations intern in Maryland?
Public relations internships in Maryland do not require a state-issued license or certification. Most employers expect current enrollment in or recent completion of a bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field. Building a portfolio with writing samples, press releases, and social media work strengthens any application. Maryland's concentration of federal agencies, nonprofits, and healthcare institutions means internships often emphasize government affairs communications or mission-driven messaging.
Which companies hire public relations interns in Maryland?
Maryland public relations intern roles are posted by State Farm, GEICO, and Johns Hopkins University and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Maryland's mix of federal contractors, major hospital systems, and established nonprofits means public relations internships appear across a wider range of industries than most states.
Which Maryland cities have the most public relations intern jobs?
Baltimore, Bethesda, and Rockville have the most public relations intern openings in Maryland. Baltimore anchors the market through its density of hospital systems, universities, and nonprofits, while Bethesda and the broader D.C. suburb corridor attract openings driven by federal contractors, think tanks, and advocacy organizations headquartered near the capital.
Are there remote public relations intern jobs in Maryland?
Yes, and more than many fields. About 53% of public relations intern openings tied to Maryland are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the desk-based, writing-heavy nature of the role. Media relations, social media management, and content drafting tend to be the functions most accessible remotely, while event coordination and press conference support almost always require an in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a public relations intern in Maryland with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly through university career centers, particularly at institutions like the University of Maryland College Park or Towson University, which maintain strong relationships with Maryland employers running structured internship cohorts. Johns Hopkins, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, and Maryland-based nonprofits frequently accept candidates with minimal experience if they submit strong writing samples. Volunteering to manage communications for a campus organization or local nonprofit builds the portfolio that substitutes for paid experience.
Where can I find and apply to public relations intern jobs in Maryland?
You can find and apply to public relations intern jobs in Maryland on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across Baltimore, Bethesda, Annapolis, and other Maryland markets. Search the listings for roles that match your schedule, industry interest, and experience level, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
