Research Engineer Jobs in New Jersey: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a research engineer in New Jersey?
The most direct path is earning a bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline, then applying to associate or junior research engineer roles at New Jersey's large pharmaceutical, defense, or materials science employers. Research engineering in New Jersey does not require a state-issued professional engineer license for most industry roles, though pursuing licensure through the New Jersey State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors strengthens candidacy for senior positions. A master's degree accelerates placement into independent research roles.
Which companies hire research engineers in New Jersey?
Employers hiring research engineers in New Jersey right now include Innodata, CACI International, and Timken, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. New Jersey's dense pharmaceutical corridor and established defense contractor presence mean research engineering openings appear consistently across a broad range of industries and company sizes throughout the state.
Which New Jersey cities have the most research engineer jobs?
Florham Park, Trenton, and Gibbstown currently have the most research engineer openings in New Jersey. Princeton draws demand from its concentration of pharmaceutical and biotech campuses, while Parsippany and the Newark metro reflect the presence of large corporate R&D centers and defense contractors that have maintained long-term operations in northern New Jersey.
Are there remote research engineer jobs in New Jersey?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields. About 100% of research engineer openings tied to New Jersey are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the fact that much of the work involves laboratory equipment, physical prototypes, or on-site collaboration. Computational research, data analysis, and modeling-focused roles within larger research teams are the most likely to offer remote or hybrid arrangements.
How can I get hired as a research engineer in New Jersey with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a co-op, internship, or new-graduate associate research engineer program at one of New Jersey's major pharmaceutical or defense employers, such as those in the Princeton or Parsippany areas that recruit directly from regional engineering schools. Candidates from adjacent roles like laboratory technician, quality assurance engineer, or research associate can make a lateral move by highlighting hands-on experimental work. A strong portfolio of academic or independent research projects and any relevant coursework in materials, biomedical, or systems engineering gives a clear edge.
Where can I find and apply to research engineer jobs in New Jersey?
You can find and apply to research engineer jobs in New Jersey on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that fit your background and target area, and apply directly to each position from the listing.
