Tips for Your Retirement Plan Consultant Job Search
Tailor your resume to plan types
Hiring managers scan for experience with specific plan types like 401(k), 403(b), or defined benefit. Name the plan structures you've worked on, the participant counts you've served, and the recordkeeping platforms you've used, such as Fidelity, Voya, or Empower.
Earn certifications before you apply
The QKA, QPA, and ERPA credentials from ASPPA and NIPA signal compliance depth that a bachelor's degree alone doesn't show. Completing even one before applying puts you ahead of candidates who list only work history and generic financial planning experience.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists retirement plan consultant openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter openings by recordkeeping platform
Many postings require hands-on experience with a specific recordkeeping system. Search for openings that name the platform your background matches, whether that's Empower, Principal, TIAA, or another provider, so you clear the initial screening faster.
Prepare a compliance scenario answer
Interviewers routinely ask how you'd handle a plan correction under the IRS Employee Plans Compliance Resolution System. Walk through a specific corrective action you've executed or studied, naming the error type and the resolution path you'd take.
Negotiate using your book of business
If you're moving from a consulting or advisory firm, quantify the plan assets or participant counts you managed. That number anchors a compensation conversation more effectively than title or years of experience alone.
Retirement Plan Consultant Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most retirement plan consultants?
The companies hiring the most retirement plan consultants right now include CBIZ, Alvarez & Marsal, and American General Life Insurance, with the largest share of openings in New York, Maryland, and Virginia, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is concentrated at recordkeeping firms, third-party administrators, and large insurance carriers managing group retirement benefits.
How many retirement plan consultant jobs are remote?
About 18% of retirement plan consultant openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the document-heavy, platform-driven nature of plan administration. Roles focused on compliance testing, plan document preparation, and participant reporting tend to offer the most location flexibility, while client-facing relationship management roles more often require in-person availability.
How do you become a retirement plan consultant?
Start by building foundational knowledge of qualified plan rules through coursework or self-study in ERISA and IRC regulations. Entry-level roles at third-party administrators or recordkeeping firms provide hands-on plan administration experience. From there, earning a credential like the QKA or QPA validates your technical depth and opens doors to senior consulting and client-facing positions.
Can you get hired as a retirement plan consultant without direct experience?
Yes, some employers hire candidates with adjacent backgrounds in financial services, accounting, or employee benefits administration into junior plan administrator or analyst roles. Passing an ASPPA or NIPA examination before applying signals commitment to the field and compensates for limited direct experience. Roles at smaller third-party administrators are often the most accessible entry points.
What does the retirement plan consultant interview process look like?
Most employers run a phone screen focused on your plan administration background and familiarity with relevant regulations, followed by one or two rounds with a hiring manager and a technical interviewer. Expect scenario-based questions on plan corrections, discrimination testing, or client escalations. Some firms add a written compliance exercise or ask you to walk through a sample plan document review.
Where can I find and apply to retirement plan consultant jobs?
You can find and apply to retirement plan consultant jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your plan type experience and credential level, then apply directly to each opening that fits.
