Corporate Safety Manager

Position Summary

Responsible to conduct professional investigations and to maintain site control for routine to complex major accidents, incidents, public claims, and company damage claims where company facilities may be involved resulting in loss of life, personal injury and/or property damage. As a subject matter expert, determine liability and negotiate settlements within assigned approval authority, with input from management and/or legal counsel, as directed or required. Provide training on risk mitigation policies and process to assigned business areas, as needed.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Serve as subject matter expert for all areas of Accident Investigation, Root Cause Analysis, cargo claims and OS&D. Develop, implement and manage safety programs, training, compliance, assessments and reporting.
• Major Incidents – As subject matter expert, conduct professional investigations of routine to complex major incidents. Control and investigate site where damage or incident occurred ensuring that all evidence is secured and on-site safety is assured. Maintain chain of custody of physical evidence. Perform research and complete documentation (e.g., incident reports) in accordance with guidelines. Obtain witness statements and communicate with regulatory officials and agencies (local, state and federal) to provide reports and obtain records. Under the direction of the Claims Manager, may conduct professional investigations for high profile major incidents and litigated matters.
• Litigation Support – For assigned cases, provide litigation support throughout the process including strategic planning, data gathering, and participation in mediations, settlement conferences, and court proceedings. Under the direction of legal counsel, ensure case facts are effectively investigated and communicated and that documentation and other evidence is collected and provided. Ensure that case files are well developed and accurate. Collaborate with legal counsel on determination of appropriate reserve funding.
• Risk Mitigation - Provide specialized training to assigned business units to ensure that first responders are trained to take appropriate action when an incident occurs for which the company may have legal liability. May develop or participate in development of specialized training for first responders.
• Lead the Behavior Based Safety programming, training and observations.
• Coordinates with Maintenance Departments for inspection of equipment to assure proper maintenance and repair.
• Handle and investigate accidents and claims for accuracy and completion of information and regulation requirements and work with managers to use tools to be proactive in preventing them.
• Ensure all accidents are entered into our Safety Management System timely and completely by the regional operation personnel.
• Provide safety metrics on regional accident trends and cargo claims. Use information to plan, develop and implement training and/or corrective actions.
• Promote, oversee and assess safety meetings, safety observation, near-miss incidents, and safety coaching & Retrieves, reads and interprets information from our Mobile Communication System (Critical Events, Hours of Service and equipment status).
• Stay abreast of new and evolving trends, information and regulations pertaining to occupation safety, fleet safety, fire/life safety.
• Manage and lead direct reports development, training, coaching, feedback and performance.
• Other duties as assigned

Additional functions and responsibilities

• Knowledge of FMCSA regulations
• Knowledge of CMV Accident Investigations, Cargo Claims and claims handling
• Knowledge of DOT Accident Register
• Knowledge of Federal / State OSHA regulations and standards
• Knowledge of State DOT Transportation regulations

Requirements:

• 5 years experience in Trucking, Commerical Transportation
• 3 years expereince in Trucking claims, accident investigation and settlements
• Proficient computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Power point and Google
• Proficient in using the internet to search information on government websites
• Must be extremely organized and be able to work in a fast paced working environment.

• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
• Self-starter who is proficient working in fast-paced, dynamic and multi-tasking environment
• Possess valid driver’s license, CDL Preferred

Pay: $60,000.00 - $95,000.00 per year
