Industrial Hygienists and Safety & Health Professionals will be compensated basic salary plus 10% for each hour they are required to use personal protective equipment (excluding hard hats, boots, hearing and eye protection) to enter a hazardous worksite to consult, inspect or investigate where serious hazards are present.

If hired as bilingual (not required), after passing an assessment of your ability to write and speak fluently. We do not use translating software. Employees with bilingual responsibilities receive a 5% increase in pay.

The Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I), Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) is looking for a Consultation Operations Safety Specialist to join our Consultation, Education and Outreach team.
This is a statewide role where your expertise will help employers build stronger safety and health programs and recognize workplaces that are making safety a priority. You’ll work with a wide range of customers and partners, provide technical assistance and training, conduct onsite evaluations, and help lead several of DOSH’s voluntary safety programs.
We value our employees and their work-life balance by encouraging flexible schedules. This position can be offered with a flexible schedule (4/10’s, 9/80’s, 5/8’s etc.) once fully trained and approved by management.
For this position, teleworking is permitted on occasion dependent upon business needs and supervisor approval. The assigned duty station can be at any of our L&I locations Statewide.

Duties
What You’ll Do
Serving as a technical safety resource for employers, business and labor organizations, and DOSH staff, you’ll:
- Provide safety expertise, consultation, training, and presentations on workplace safety and health topics.
- Lead and coordinate statewide programs including the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP), L&I Safety Excellence Program, Challenge Program, Minor Variance Program, and Self-Insurance Evaluations.
- Lead onsite evaluations and work with DOSH professionals to assess workplace safety and health programs.
- Review applications, conduct quality assurance audits, and help employers address identified hazards.
- Build relationships with employers, industry groups, and other safety professionals.
- Help develop and improve safety and health programs, processes, and program materials.
- Represent DOSH at conferences, training events, and other outreach activities.

Driving is an essential function of this position. The incumbent is required to travel between worksites to perform assigned duties and must operate a state-issued vehicle, motor pool vehicle, or personally owned vehicle (POV), as appropriate. Use of a POV will be reimbursed at the current state mileage reimbursement rate.
Must be able to safely navigate a variety of work environments, including large manufacturing facilities with metal stairways, catwalks, ladders, and uneven terrain. Must also be able to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions, using appropriate protective gear.

REQUIRED:

- A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, or related field AND four years of paid occupational/industrial safety related professional experience

OR
- A Master’s Degree from an accredited university in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, or similar field AND two years of professional experience.*

- Four years of full-time journey level experience in one or more of the following industries: Government, military, public health or related safety and health field.
- College-level education will substitute, year for year, for up to four years of non-safety and health experience.
- Additional safety and health qualifying experience will substitute year for year, for education.
- Qualifying experience" is defined as experience [conducting independent WISHA or OSHA safety and health inspections in the workplace; or regulatory related inspections in the workplace, including construction, manufacturing and other industries; investigating accidents; and writing technical reports] as a Safety & Health Officer, Consultant, Inspector, or WISHA or OSHA inspection, or regulatory related experience.
DESIRED:
- Demonstrated leadership in accident investigations, inspections, and regulatory enforcement
- Ability to walk and inspect a wide range of work environments from industrial plants to rugged outdoor job sites
- Knowledge of safety and health regulations. Able to understand and explain to customers how to comply with regulations.
